So we've begun the pick phase by picking India.
I'll be honest, this is not playing the odds. The best leader in this game available is probably something like Joao, Zara, or Mehmed, paired with an undercosted non-Agriculture civilization like Mali. But I don't play a lot of base BtS, so I wanted to play with one of the two broken things that RBmod has nerfed into oblivion: Financial or India. Financial was attractive to me, but the pairings that remain are Elizabeth (5 pts), Ragnar (4pts), and Wang Kon, a steal at 3pts. I think the best pairing for my constraints (Fin or India) is probably Wang Kon of China, and picking China is pretty cool in that it basically dares someone to take Wang Kon and leave a point on the table...but I'm not entirely sure on a tight, land-bordery, expensive map I won't be the only one who thinks Protective is only slightly worse than Aggressive...and there's a lot of snake picking between me and the my second pick. So, India...there are literally half a dozen leaders that opens up that I'm only competing with Inca for, and I have my doubts that Inca will even be picked. So as we watch the wheel, let's speculate blindly on the dubious virtues of DuGaulle, Brennus, Cyrus, Mao, and Genghis Tha Man Himself Khan. You know what I'm tempted by...

I guess one of the point of fast workers is you need fewer of them. Not that cheap granaries are bad or anything. EDIT not that it's relevant as you've picked Brennus. Definitely not normal boring traits.

Quick thoughts on the picks: Regentman: Peter of the Ottomans Quote:I am…notably cool towards this combination. There’s nothing wrong about any element, but Boringman of Boringciv…just doesn’t melt my butter.Donovan Zoi: Mao of Inca Quote:Pindicator and I were wondering if another was going to take Inca. It feels a little expensive for the benefits gained, Mao of Inca is about equivalent to Sury of America. He’ll be able to crash his economy good and hard if he wants to overcompensate for Pitboss 41. Let’s see.Alhazard: Zara Yaqob of Mongolia Quote:Honestly? I think this is the best combo of the snake pick. Close, so Creative is good. Expensive, so Organized is good (probably undercosted for this game). Mongols have awesome horse archers (close) and stables (game will be won at knights). Just everything here is golden.Gavagai: Ragnar of Rome Quote:Ragnar of the Zulu might be better, but this is a scary scary thing folks. Theorycrafting about swords is all well and good, but having base strength 8 units at the dirt cheap 40 hammer cost is bad enough, but C2 makes those 9.6, something that I can’t even see wanting to push knights in towards. Ragnar’s Financial goodness will be “good enough” to handle the rest. Despite the pick only costing a total of 4 points, this actually might be the second best pick, certainly top three.Chumchu: Mehmed of the Aztecs Quote:I won’t keep you on tenderhooks, this is the other candidate for second best pick. I don’t care for doubling discounts, but let’s be honest, we’d all want 45-hammer courthouses. BtS, you can keep slavery forever, so why not halve the hate? Mehmed is good…we just hope he won’t snipe Hinduism from us.Irismono and GeneralKillCavalry: Roosevelt of Mali Quote:Aha. Another team seems to believe that Org was undercosted. I’m still not exactly sure if I like the obsessive pairing of Mali with Industrious, but forges are still good. Mali’s perhaps the best non-agriculture civilization available for skirmisher goodness…I think these guys will do okay. The combo says defensive building, at least.Commodicator: Brennus of India Quote:This combo is…not great. I’ll post the conversations that led to each element, but fun > optimal is a pretty good summary of the thinking. That said, I like Fast Workers, I like us to get Stonehenge, and with careful work we should be able to land an early shrine along with ubiquitous Organized Religion.Superdeath: Hannibal of Egypt Quote:Superdeath would of course choose to be led by the Grace of Baal. Charismatic is good if you can’t trust happy (here in MUCH better whipping environs), Financial is rumored to be a pretty okay trait I hear. I’m guessing Egypt now, with Obelisks’ mild synergy with charismatic might inform SD a little more than it ought. War chariots, Wheels, and Agriculture are the real reason we snag Egypt.
