Civ4 AI Survivor: Season Four

There are AI mods for BTS which make AI several tiers stronger, you know... Still don't get why Sulla does not want to use the best AI available in the battle of bots but it's his decision...

I get the impression that people are still playing SP for fun, just from the comments made around Civ AI Survivor. I certainly am (MP is just too much like work for me, it turns out). So, if there are mods out there that are challenging without just being horribly unbalanced in production / costs (the impresssion I get of BtS Deity - bear in mind I've never really tried harder than Emperor), there might be some interest in SGs or challenges. IIRC K-mod is supposed to be worth a try. @Bob - what's the mod you were playing?

Well, I think the answer to that is that he doesn't like messing with mods.

I personally would rather have imperfect AIs that are prone to crazy/irrational stuff.

What's different there? AFAIK, BTS just kept Blake's same AI from Warlords.

In K-Mod AI is very strong, sometimes it almost feels like you are playing MP against humans. Some people dislike it because it makes AIs very aggressive on high difficulty levels, they do archer rushes on Immortal / Deity very early in the game (which is a very reasonable thing for them to do given an amount of free production available). I actually rarely bother with Deity in this mod as in 50% of starts I am just guaranteed to die to 10 archers at my doors on T50. A thing to keep in mind is that K-Mod makes a lot of minor balance changes to the base game. I like most of them but I can understand if someone would find it offputting.
Better BTS AI is weaker than K-Mod in most circumstances but it is still noticeably better than the base one and makes no changes to other aspects of the game. Some people argue AIs actually tech better than in K-Mod as they build fewer units and go to war less often but I am skeptical about that claim. I once started on a continent with Elizabeth and a bunch of other pacificists, no one ever declared and tech rate was through the roof. I'd rather say that in K-Mod AI personalities are more pronounced, peaceful leaders remain in peace and tech like crazy while warlike AIs go to war a lot and are pretty good at it.

Don't worry, even the best AI will give you lots of weed. I'd say that at least in K-Mod AI personalities are much more distinct, you can really see a lot of difference in playstyles between different leaders. I think it would make their battles more interesting to watch, not less.

I think it could be fun to have one "bonus" game at the very end of the season with K-Mod. Same map, same AIs as in the final game, would be really interesting to compare. I don't know however if Sulla would want to do and if there anyone who could step in his place. I am certainly not up to.

My favorite thing about this season is that for the last two games Sullla has called cuirassiers "Courvoisier".  lol

So what is it that makes Gandhi such an incredibly good AI? All other AIs with anything near that unit emphasis and aggression rating are uniformly "food" but somehow that dadgum super-callused fragile mystic plagued with halitosis manages to be just resilient enough, and actually does fight decently when finally forced into war. It baffles me.

Random.org is going to put a lot of us to shame this season, I predict.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

Extremes. If he's going to lose he's going to lose, but if he's going to win, he often wins before he can lose.

Mansa is a more obvious example IMO. Mansa is a vulnerable AI, but you give him just that little bit of space and his tech edge saves him.

We may see the same opposite extreme from Julius next game, when he wins domination using knights on turn 275.

Edit: Actually I think if Ghandi was in Frederick's position next game we might see him lose like 100/100 games. Would be fun for alternate history.
