It is nice to dream. But I assume that I am not going to find something like that in Normal difficulty, which is where this character is now. I am still just trying to find something useful for all equipment slots. I have a shield of fast blocking, and recently found a helm of vim for a vitality boost. No rings or amulet yet, maybe I should try Wirt to see what he has?

IIRC, all item affixes become available in D1 by around dungeon level 14 even on normal difficulty. Difficulty definitely doesn't matter for shopping. As soon as you see any bastard swords at Griswold (any one means you're at whatever the character level requirement might be), you can shop until you find something with a good damage modifier.
The 50 gold for Wirt is trivial, but he mostly isn't worth the walking time over there, it's a better use of time to new-game and shop Griswold repeatedly.

Last time I checked, it looked like drops being dependent on dungeon level and not difficulty, unlike later "arpg" games. And I got a plain King's sword, and a different sword of haste too, in normal hell.

Ah, the good old days on Diablo Spawn. Not knowing the game well enough, Dupers and Hackers were making more KSOTitan than KSOHaste... when these and GPOWhale were littered in games

Can Wirt have rings or amulets? I do not currently have anything in those slots, so anything non-cursed would be of use.

I don't remember. I think not, but not sure.

Did some checking in the bible and found that Wirt will sell jewelry in single player but not in multi-player. (At least, if I am interpreting the foot note correctly.) This warrior is multi-player, so no jewelry is possible from Wirt.

My warrior made it through the catacombs and started the caves, then promptly died there to a huge crowd of mud men and Night Clan goat men. Getting his gear back proved troublesome, as there were at least 15 enemies crowded around between the stairs and where he died a short distance away. Took two tries, burning through full heal potions and then running back to town for another set of potions, but he finally cleared out the crowd and was able to recover his gear. Glad to have that done and decent equipment again.
Archers on the far side of those lava streams are a pain.

Back playing my D1 warrior again, after some time with Diablo 3 (barbarian) and giving Grim Dawn a try during the recent free weekend on Steam (fun, plan to play more of this one soon). Wandering through the first level of the caves and the last level of the catacombs -- caves are just a bit too difficult at the moment. Got a brutal bastard sword of precision (+93% damage, +19 dex) from a goat man boss, nice upgrade from what I had been using. Now if I can just find some decent armor....
I ran into Blightfire, fire clan goat archer boss that throws blood stars rather than shooting arrows. He had about 20 fire clan archers with him, so I was getting blasted with arrows and blood stars. Barely escaped with a town portal, that boss was nasty.
Any suggestions for handling the caves with a warrior? I am having big trouble with ranged attackers on the other side of the lava streams.

Really, spells are the best way against shooters out of your range, even for a warrior. Either Fireball or Chain Lightning, or regular Lightning might get the job done too. If you run into a pack like that, go buy a pile of mana potions and put on whatever gear for +magic and +mana you can find (mana is the limiting factor.)
