Diablo 1 on GOG?

If they're doing it anything like Civ 4 or SMAC, you'll get separate shortcuts for base game only and expansion(s). Also, FYI, you can disable or roll back updates in GOG Galaxy - I did that when an update broke new-MOO for me in early access.

I liked reading along and I really want to give Diablo 1 a try again!

Glad you have enjoyed reading along, RFS-81. It has been fun to play, and all the vets here have been very helpful with info and advice. You are probably already aware of them, but Sullla's streams of his melee sorceror Shanty Pete have been lots of fun and very informative.

Made a couple more trips into hell levels 13 and 14, some tough fighting but nothing life threatening. The succubi and their blood stars are a pain, my warrior has mostly cleared them out using his bow to avoid having to chase them. The levels in hell are so open you end up following them halfway across the level, activating tons of new enemies. frown Just have to be careful to deal with any melee enemies first, so as not to get caught with bow (and without shield!) by a melee mob.

Was stuck waiting for an appointment earlier today, and ended up thinking about the world of Diablo. Specifically, the economics of it. Tristram must be a terrible mess, economically. Much of the population has been killed by demons or undead, or they have fled elsewhere for safety. No one in the surrounding areas is going to want to deliver goods to the town -- just too dangerous. Food and supplies must be running very short.

And then this lunatic adventuring hero shows up and starts bringing huge amounts of gold out of the labyrinth under the town and throwing money at every merchant in town! Instant inflation, with prices soaring to levels none of the common people can possibly pay. No wonder the only people we see in Tristram are the merchants selling things to adventurers -- they are the only ones who can afford to stay. (Well, plus the whole demons and undead thing.) No wonder Wirt charges 50 gold just to see his latest item -- that is probably barely enough to buy a meal.

Pepin and Adria must be shipping in whatever they brew their potions from by the wagon load. Cauldrons simmering day and night trying to keep up with demand. Griswold could probably melt down enough scrap from all the junk items being sold to him to keep his forge supplied, so he is probably doing ok. He would also be working full time trying to keep up.

The person who is really making a fortune in Tristram is elder Cain. 100 gold a shot for identifying stuff? The old man must have quite a tidy sum stashed away by now. nod

Are any of the monsters edible? Maybe there's time to rush in shortly after the hero cleared the floor, before the monsters respawn. Come to think of it, you don't see any of the old corpses after the monsters respawn...

I guess the scavenger monsters eat the corpses. They will do so if you give them a chance to break away from combat and heal, so presumably they would do so when the hero was not around. (Or after the hero was killed...less pleasant to think about!)

As for edible by humans? Ick. frown But some of them would be I guess. The animal type monsters at least could be, and maybe some of the demons could be eaten if you were sufficiently hungry. The undead creatures probably not.

In his ongoing quest to destroy all barrels hammer, my warrior continues piling up gold. More time re-rolling Griswold. frown A lot of new games did turn up a weapon upgrade: a savage bastard sword of precision, +103% damage and +19 to dexterity. smile Now if he could just get that 'of the Heavens' suffix to show up on some decent armor or a helm, instead of on bows and axes. Or a Lord's prefix on a bastard sword, instead of on staves. So many items that are almost what he could use, but not quite right. cry Still, at least some of the prefixes and suffixes he wants are appearing; just need the right combination on the right base item type.

He also gained a level to 25; one more level and elixirs should start appearing for sale in town. That should provide a useful way to spend his excess cash without needing to re-roll Griswold a hundred times. Hopefully a much smaller number of rolls should find elixirs to purchase.

Well, I finally installed and tried the game. Squishy the sorcerer is living up to his name while I try to train my fingers on the move-fight-spell commands ... and try get to grips with the idea that spells are aimed at a point in space, not at an enemy. I think. Basically just training up myself as much as the character on the very first dungeon  level, scurrying back to town regularly for healing and re-supply.

Also, am I right in understanding there is no "pause" button? Given my reaction speeds and general lack of coordination, this could be painful. Fun, but painful.

If you ask the townspeople about the quests (more in single player), some of them have things to say about what happened to the townsfolk, particularly Gillian and Farnham.

In single player, I think the escape button pauses (or not sure if I'm thinking of D2.) In multiplayer in both games, there is no pause (how could you pause when there are others playing?)

Oh well, that went ... poorly. I tried MP mode, died hilariously a few times while simply getting used to the controls, but started to make something resembling progress. Then, on level 3, I got cocky and careless, and stumbled across a mix of Burning Dead and a unique Devilkin with his mob while already low on charges for my bolt staff. Tried to flee, got lost, literally dropped my scroll of town portal in the panic and died.

That would have been OK(ish), except that when I came back down - using a club and buckler I'd picked up to try to handle any Burning Dead between me and my corpse - I couldn't find the staff. I spent ages looking around, but nada. Don't know if it vanished because it had zero charges left, or if it was simply hidden behind something or what, but that meant no way I could see to handle the mobs of fire-resistant skeletons (I'd found books of heal and telekinesis, but no more attack spells). I pushed on a bit, but seemed to enter a death spiral where I could no longer build up the money to consider trying to get a new spell book from Adria. A bit of a literal death spiral. With hindsight, I could have reset once I'd recovered my gear and got working on building up cash / getting more spells by re-working the first and second floors, resetting again if I ended up against too much fire-resistant stuff. But any good stuff I had is gone now that I've quit...

So I'm going to try again from scratch - possibly in single player mode - I'm a sucker for a good story, after all.
