Hm what to pick for second round. Roughly same map, contintents with narrow straight. Naval civ is probably good choice, but it also have a civ wich strength blooms in medieval or later start.
List of civs with naval power or seafaring UU with good start for medieval and later.
-Phoenica, Altough they are more classical civ, I still put them here because its bonuses are very tempting. Half cost harbor and 50% production bonus for ALL navy units (unlike Norway who only get bonus for melee navy units), catch: need to build Cothon first which I can build from start here.
Cothon also offers big healing if ships heals inside borders of city with Cothon.
Also cities with Cothons get 50% production cost for settlers, with colonization and ancrestal hall that is whopping 150% production bonus for settlers. Also settlers get extra movement in sea and embarking.
Start with writing boost is useless in Medieval start, also Bireme is an classical unit, altough medieval start means navy is an classical ones from start, so a little advantage from start.
Government plaza gives 50% boost to districts, can build cothon or campuses faster this way, in single player this can be used for quick spaceport.
-England, half cost harbors are always good, UU privateer, aboslute go with Vicky instead Eleanor. Vicky has become a warmonger leader while Eleanor is more of peaceful culture flipping.
-Germany, UU is nice and Hansa's should get online fast with medieval start. Extra military card and beatstick against city states are always nice.
-Indonesia, very tempting early Frigates in form of Jong, also good shot for early religion and buy naval units with faith in addition of producing them.
-Norway, better used from classical age, though berserkers could be gained soon and with power to cross ocean already, might suprise TheArchduke by sending Berserkers other side of island instead narrow channel.
-Japan, all round and solid. Samurai from start might be nice.
-Brazil got late game UU in form of Mineas Geras. But Brazil isn't really my cup of tea.
-Spain, bit too wacky. Need to settle upon other contintent to make most out Spain.
-Netherlands, solid economic development with rivers and strong UU with seven provincien.
Very different start then I am used to, Medieval start which means that many things are already set. First thing first, settle in place and spread out units for scouting, 2nd settler follows river.
Bought 2 tiles and I intended to use builder for rice, horse and incense. After sending save I thought about it and it was probably not the strongest move. Craftsmanship boost isn't needed, so no need for 3 improvements.
What I probably should have done is improve horse and incense and use 3rd charge of builder to chop to speed up things. Too late now.
Medieval start means government and policies from start:
I chose Autocracy, no direct fight so no need for Oligrachy and it takes a while before districts are set up, so Autocracy is most effective from start.
Note that Veterancy also gives bonus to Harbors now, so faster Cothon build in Tyre.
Finally I used 3 promotions upon Pingala, after 5 turns much needed science/culture boost. 1 promotion remaining and I am going use it for 2nd city.
Honestly I feel that I messed up the start, making some bad decisions here and there. Partly blame not used to Medieval start, started to do things out habit for example attempt to boost something which is already finished since it is ancient or classical tech/civic.
But at least I did finish Cothon which gave me turn 3 settler and now turn 2 Bireme. After 10 turns from now ancient age is going end. I am going get in golden age thanks Cothon and Bireme.
Found city state at south of island which turned out smaller then round 1 versus TheArchduke. Which means that majority of city states should be outside islands where I and TheArchduke resides.
With that knowledge I start building 1st Bireme and intends to massproduce them. If possible find and choke TheArchduke with Biremes.
Sorry for not updating, it was bit boring turns. I just went balance between settlers and navy built by Cothon.
And TheArchduke ignored coast till very recently, which means he lack harbors and navy. He has been spamming cities and Hansa's in center of his island.
I reached Caravels and in handful turns Frigates, time to make use of naval power!
Plan: When Frigates arrives, it bombard TheArchduke's capital and I then snipe it with knight to get cheap domination victory.
Yeah, I concede. I did good with my economy but neglected my navy, because I did not think i had any chance anyway. I think I could hide inland and struggle on, but I rather do a new game.
