Eh, don't care. Squares would be nice, but hexes can work just fine.
That's not nearly as important to game feel as something like unit stacking, where MoM's limited unit stacks (that fight as a group) is a perfect balance between Civ's early infinite stacking and later no stacking.

Let's compromise, and say 6-sided squares.

Received some additional info, and permission to share it :
"The issue is we already have a hex engine. All the AI, combat, route finding and most importantly the terrain generation in 3D rely on hexes. It can be changed to tiles but would account for 30% of all effort on initial estimates. This is one of the pains of 3D, but sadly what people expect these days! :) "

I love to play NSWE-maps (north and south, west and east are connected, its a torus in 3D), because the feeling of a real planet with its "You can't escape!" is greater. Dominions, *Civ: Call to Power' and some other games has it - I hope MoM2 too.

Hexes.
I would much prefer that extra 30% went into making other parts of the game than just converting hexes to squares.

One important thing; what would be with the manual_lead battles-?? Will they work with hexes-?

Why not split the difference and go with pentagons?

Well, pentagons don't tile easily. However, there's Penrose tiling, and Escher tiling, which could be interesting, especially with psychedelic colours.
