Well, I'm being too harsh on myself and not harsh enough on the mapmaker.

Let's play the game of "Which of these should be my start"
I THINK OPTION 2...

Not very motivated this game, but not the worst in demos either. After finishing granaries, cities will go into a second wave of settler/worker construction as we near monotheism. Given the failure to grab poly, i decided that it's wiser to spend some time on dev techs, finishing off sailing and animal husbandry.

I plan to change the dotmap in the south may a bit. The future capital will be at the wheat/floodplains tile. I plan to settle that city, the pigs, and 2/3 southern op start why the hell was that not my start cities.

Mono is next, should be out relatively quickly, and when workers/settlers pop out, cities will start cranking out altars. In two cities i will accompany this with a chop, the rest are out of forests or didnt have any to begin with.

Fun.

Not putting the requisite effort into this game, I shouldn't be playing more than 1 pb at a time.

But, unlike the other games I've played here, I have genuine questions for the mapmaker.
Why did I get my spawn, and not the image I sent a post or two ago?
Why?
Why??
Why???

I seriously feel like I got screwed out in the early game with this start, and this trait pick did not make it better.

I genuinely think that my immediate start totally screwed me. I have three cities that lack a food tile better than 3 food, and two of those only have one because I've built farms on rivers.
Only with my 4th city (not counting capital) did I get a proper food resource. City #6 is on the way, and after a sacrificial altar in the capital, it will be time for another one.

I could be microing far better, but I'm really discouraged, and my dedlurkers aren't active whatsoever.

What about strategy for the future?

Well, continue expanding, hopefully not see any of my neighbors come too close or too threatening.
With sacrificial altars, I pretty much can forget about maintenance.

I don't think I can talk too much about the map-making process while the game is going on, it could allow you to infer information about the map you don't have yet. If you're still wondering when you have the map revealed then I'll explain my reasoning.

Also, I'd encourage you to keep trying to improve your position. I think people often give up hope in civ much earlier than the game position dictates and you can do an awful lot by keep trying to make good decisions vs  going on autopilot.

I'm completely spoiled, so I can't get specific about advice or anything, but I'd be happy to pop in and ask questions about your plans and what's happening. I don't know if that would be helpful or not. I've found that it's easier to engage when people interact. it can also be a pain in the ass, too, of course wink As you can see by post counts, some people post a lot and some not very much at all.

For instance, you've got a bunch of sites picked out - what order are you planning on settling them?

I should say that I don't pretend that my advice would be good or even useful if I could dedlurk wink

Thanks for the support. And I am trying to think about how to make it out of this mess now. I think my key mistake was filling in a lot of the intermediate land instead of just aiming for the good spots right off the bat, even if the maintenance is higher and workers more difficult to micro. It would give much more payoff in terms of production immediately. I plan to settle the wheat gold next, then the second copper spot with the fish, and then the floodplains. After that, I will backfill two cities and settle on an island to my west.

My plan is to get optics as soon as I can and start making connections, border agreements, and milking what I can from trade routes and the coast. with 16 players and this start, I do not think I could've gone for any wonders or still can (that is the realm of ind players like gavagai anyhow). I do not plan to fool around with religions either. I could've gone for them much more directly, but I realized that my dev would be absolute crap. Unimproved cities, lack of animal husbandry and sailing. Just not worth it. the goal is to just get my shit together here and carefully maneuver into just a solid position economically. Financial + islands + optics + cheap courthouses is the name of game.

I'm sorry I haven't been posting much (been posting much more in 45).

hey - anything to help smile

Couple more questions:

Do you think about foodtiles in terms of foodhammers? I found that analyzing where my best foodhammer tiles are often helps me decide where to plant. Like that cow near the cap is a great tile, though plains cow has the problem of not allowing fast growth.

is there a way you can make a workboat that you can have ready to go when you plant the sheep/fish tile, so you can immediately start building a granary. Fish are awesome tiles for you (5 foodhammers, but a lovely 3 commerce).
