[SPOILERS] scooter tries Civ6

What cards are you going to run with the new government. Urban planning might not be bad, every little bit helps especially this early on.

Once that warrior is healed, you should defog up near Changsha to make sure there is not a whole set of plains. He might come down that way and not the narrow hill filled path.

Turn 52

Lots happening here! The turn opened by reminding me the current age ends in 9 turns. This is good, because by the end of the turn, we locked in a Golden Age. Over in the east, we were the first to meet Mexico City.

Kinda useless compared to other options. This completed Political Philosophy, getting us +1 Era point. We then picked up another +2 points for swapping to Autocracy, and then…

+3 for meeting everyone, which gets us to an even 25/25. Hello, Cornflakes. His yield output also outpaces me quite a bit, but not as severely as Alhambram.

He’s a city ahead of me currently.

We’re into Autocracy now. Policies:

Reminder that I’m gonna swap again in 4T, so I went ahead and took Corvee for now. This combined with Autocracy speeds Pyramids up, and it’ll now finish T54 when the last builder charges goes through. I’m not actually using the builder policy right now thanks to the wall swap, so these two policies seemed best. Definitely agreed with Banzailizard’s Urban Planning remark for at least the next 4 turns. I would have done a quick stint in Surveyors to buy the Holy Site tile, but with war possibly on the horizon and all, that still seems like a bad use of gold now.

Picking up Discipline for the other military slot is really just a placeholder, as nothing else will do anything in the next 4T. Maneuver will replace it soon enough.

Happy days. Monumentality save us? I don’t think it can, but maybe it can mitigate some of the damage at least if we manage to survive.

Alright, I have a minor dilemma. We complete the Government Plaza this turn, which picks us up an extra tile. We’re obviously going to take Researcher to give us a 4 science/turn boost. I really would like to swap things around to get Pingala into Xian and Liang into Longxi, but it’s going to cost us 5T of Pingala science, which is killer. For now, we can’t afford it as HBR is too crucial. Once we have that, though, we may be able to afford the swap. Missing out on the 15% boost is actually becoming meaningful, and Xian can more easily grow because of it’s higher housing/amenity cap.

I brought my Slinger up towards Longxi. I think I’ll actually float it a bit west so that I can use my soon-to-be-healed Changsha warrior to move north and scout that potential path as well, as Banzailizard correctly suggested.

Oh, two other things.

1) Hungary's power jumped again from 163 -> 237 (!). And he got plenty more gold. If those are coming at me, GG. I'm not sure I can get everything in place on time.

2) I checked, and it does look like everyone else will also get a Golden Age. Everyone has 22-25 era points as well, so I assume those who are not quite there yet have a plan to get the last couple points.

Just another note, looks like Alhambram has 7 diplomatic favor. He had 3 two turns ago, which suggests he now has suzerain status over at least 2 city states, or maybe 1 and a government? Do you know if he has a government yet?

Hmm. I'm not sure. Is there somewhere I can check that? I'm pretty sure someone beat me to Political Philosophy because I got fewer era points than I expected. Who though - no idea.

One of the details on the diplomacy screen should show you his current government.

Man, this is rough. I didn't expect anyone to have the gold to summon a new army every 5 turns this early in the game.

Yep. Sigh. I can get the walls in Longxi done in 4T and HBR in 3T. And I can upgrade my Slinger in there to an Archer. That's all I can do for now. I'm not sure how fast he can get there with the bonus movement. Surely he has more than this one coming too. I may be able to hold Longxi between walls and DotF? I can also take my incoming Pyramids builder and go chop some horsemen at Xian. I'll play this turn later tonight.

edit: also confirmed he almost certainly has 2 suzerains. he is still in Oligarchy.

That seems the best course. Hope the walls delay the Hungarians long enough to get horsemen out. Make sure to garrison a warrior at least in the city to raise its combat strength - if it's only strength 10 walls won't last long.

The frustrating thing is this attack costs Alhambram nothing other than some gold. D:

Turn 53

Here it is again as a wider shot. I actually pulled the warrior back after taking this. I’m not sure exactly how fast this soldier can move between +2 and Civ6’s mystifying movement rules, so I’ll just try to get away. I’d rather have the bodies (and potential to upgrade it later) than anything else.

Anyway, let’s see if we can make some chicken salad here.

Upgraded Pingala as planned. This accelerates HBR by 1T, now due EoT56.

Found another city-state, and ahh, I see another reason why Alhambram has gotten suzerains so fast. He placed a governor in here to get Suzerain status. We may be getting units from the northwest too, then. That’s especially bad news if so, as that’s our Pyramids city which is totally indefensible. Let’s set that aside for the moment. Maybe I’m wrong, but I did move our warrior towards that direction to start scouting it out.

Okay, here’s the plan.

1. I swapped Longxi to a true max-prod config, speeding walls up by 1T. That’s now due EoT57.
2. I upgraded Slinger -> Archer in Longxi. I think I can move this forward by one and take a pot-shot at the first soldier while it’s incoming? The movement speed may prevent that, though.
3. I started an archer in Xian. This will complete in 3T, which is exactly when HBR completes. At that point, we’ll start a horseman and get into Maneuver.
4. I’m continuing on towards the Pyramids. When that builder comes out, he’s going to head straight to Xian and begin pumping chops into Horsemen as fast as possible. This is going to hurt us badly longterm, but there is no longterm without is, so whatever.
5. I put a turn of production into an Archer at Changsha just because I no longer need production into Pyramids, and there wasn’t much else for it to do. Maybe it’ll matter.
6. I’ll go Bronze Working next on the off chance it matters.
7. Alhambram best not fail, or else I may continue pumping horsemen indefinitely and go pillage him to death and ensure he does not win. I don’t think he’ll fail, though. I fully expect him to overwhelm me. I have some, uh, thoughts on Civ6 and early aggression, but I’ll save those until after this war is over, one way or another.

I could have gone for walls instead at Xian, and maybe I should have. The catch is that it’ll take longer than an archer. Also, I kinda figure if it comes down to a Xian siege, my game is over anyway. I need to make a stand at Longxi. And just kinda hope Changsha doesn’t get hit instead out of the fog.

Just some casual rudeness because I can wink. Yes, I did send it.

I see now why so many Civ6 games have had early aggression. Oh wait, I said I'd wait until after the war was over.

Any compelling reasons for me to declare early?
