I’ve only played 1-2 turns since the above post, we have been progressing at snail pace recently.

 Hungary's science is over 60 compared to 20 for me and Japan. Hungary's culture is over 40 compared to my 21 and Japan's 9  How did those rates increase so rapidly? Last I checked about 5-10 turns ago I was much closer (like only 20% behind in both). And China is still alive so there's at least another free city to Hungary. If my chops had gone into settlers instead of Varu we might have had a chance to catch up but unfortunately I think this position isn't salvageable.

I wouldn't mind continuing to play on just to get some more feel for Gathering Storm in an environment where I'm thinking through moves rather than just blowing through turns in single player. But if TheArchduke has expressed desire to concede I'm happy to end this and move on to PBEM 17.

And with that, we conclude PBEM 16 with DEFEAT. Could this have ended differently if I expanded instead of fizzled on the attack? Possibly? But in hindsight my war plan vs. Japan was totally the wrong decision and guaranteed a quick victory for Alhambram's Hungary.

I don't think it would have made a difference in the end. Hungary was miles ahead in any case - I think best-case would have been you and Archduke co-existing in an uneasy truce until Alhambram managed to gain the upper hand ~100 turns down the line. See: PBEM10, PBEM15.
