[SPOILERS] Cornflakes - PBEM 17

I found Crater Lake in the far north for 1 era point. Just need 1 more! After reviewing the era score wiki I don't see any additional ways to guarantee another point. Just luck of finding another natural wonder, meeting another player beyond my northern neighbor, or galley/Amani. Speaking of my northern neighbor, still no sign of Russia yet. Crater Lake is located right on the edge of the tundra so my scout will turn southwest from here and hopefully spot intelligent life shortly. Crater lake earned the scout a promotion so exploration will proceed slightly quicker.

I found Russian culture about where expected No contact yet but probably next turn. The scout has a promotion available which I'll use next turn after moving 1SW onto the swamp. Here is a look at the expanded minimap.

I drew in my City_6 that will be founded in 4 turns (settler en route now). I also sketched in the apparent spheres of influence. It looks like the inland sea to my north/northwest will provide a nice buffer vs. Russia. See next screenshot for dotmap of my area:

Yellow will be founded in 4 turns as City_6
Blue is a decent-but-slow-starting riverside location, probably next target unless Dead Sea has nice terrain to the northwest
Red and Orange are coastal filler sites that may or may not be worth the cost of a settler
Green gets fresh water from Dead Sea but quality is unknown yet
Purple would most likely be a non-freshwater coastal site along the inland sea

That is 9 cities plus 2 fillers peaceful. I really would like to get another scout out to the west and one into Greece in the east so that I can get a decent picture of the long-term geographical position. I'm not that upset about having to slip in a galley for the era points, as long as I can find a way past Jerusalem without declaring war and losing the envoy. The scouting knowledge will be valuable.

Thanks! Let me know if there is anything else you want to see. I haven't been doing the regular civ comparisons since most of the information is displayed in the relations bar at the top of the screenshots. Cree just founded 2 more cities this turn (up to 4), one minimum distance 3W-1NW of Ravenna. I foresee some tensions in this area long term. I like my defensive position here though, especially when bolstered by an encampment 1SE of Pyramids. I like that I am set back from the isthmus far enough to command the flat land with ranged units and city walls. I'm also really loving the inland sea there as a buffer vs. Russia. Fog gazing at the sea just north of the barb camp warrior, it appears to turn west for some unknown distance. The farther the better from my perspective! Let Cree deal with the threat of Russian Cossacks!

I also made contact with Russia this turn and discovered that they have a stockpile of 500+Icon_Faith making +35-ishIcon_Faith/turn. That will be a healthy boost via Monumentality Golden Age in 7 turns when we hit Classical.

I can't speak for the other lurkers but I prefer discussion of larger strategy vs the other players/maps/war plans/expansion plans versus a lot of the micro that seems to be the focus of a lot of reports.

TBS of the Cree came asking for another loan. I re-offered on condition that Cree grant us Open Borers for 30 turns of exploration (or at least 20 turns until the DoF expires, at which time TBS could declare war to end OB). Information is power after all and right now TBS knows a lot more about my territory than I know about his.

I gave up on trying to achieve the Games & Recreation inspiration, so the gold isn't time-sensitive. When Pingala was promoted this turn for another 5Icon_Culture/turn that pushed my culture rate far in excess of my ability to reach Construction in time. Therefore I'm powering through G&R now and will leave D&P for after Pyramids completes. I'm heading to Feudalism with all speed for extra builder charges.

Skipping inspirations is an interesting aspect of the free Roman monuments that I didn't anticipate when I picked them. That ability has allowed me to skip all inspirations (other than the default ones of 6 pop, Pantheon, Barb Camp) yet keep up in terms of civics. I have been able to expand quicker as a result of focusing on settlers and builders.

jive I got the extra era point that I needed  jive I had already started the galley (1/4 turns) so I will proceed with galley construction anyway in order to get some additional exploration ... with the +100% policy a galley is nearly the same cost as a scout  crazyeye  (32.5Icon_Production vs 30Icon_Production adjusted production). [EDIT: by “proceed” I mean delay 2-3 turns so the era points count towards next GA]

TBS turned down my loan + OB offer. I'll offer straight OB once I have a scout ready to move that direction. I offered OB to Russia this turn. I doubt they'll accept (no benefit to them) but It would save me having to skirt around through the tundra.

Is the screenshot from live during the game or done after the turn by reloading?

I think I know why you ask lol my offer got sent asking for all of TBS gold per turn. Screenshot was taken live, but then I wanted to see how much gold per turn TBS was making so I increased the GPT on his side to max. I know because I played that turn pretty quick and re-loaded my end-of-turn save a day or two later to look around in more detail when the turn was delayed. Hopefully TBS recognizes this as an honest mistake and doesn't get offended  scared

Sorry for the lapse in updates. Between overtime being the new normal, and trying to catch up from a couple days out of town there isn't much time left at the end of the day lol

I ended up selecting Monumentality for the Golden Age dedication. I won't get much benefit but it's more than nothing. I have 1 specialty district completed (Government Plaza) so neither of the first two dedications make sense. I was considering Exodus of the Evangelists but I have enough faith to immediately purchase one builder, and will get at least 1 more builder purchase this era. And the extra builder movement will be useful as well.

Here's an overview screenshot. General plan is Construction for Lumbermill production > Astrology + Celestial Navigation for Harbors > Engineering for Baths (still need to build ancient walls for the Engineering eureka). I'm planning to get Harbors online by the end of the Classical era in order to run Free Inquiry dedication during a Medieval Golden Age. I should easily achieve the necessary era score through Legion + Bath bonus points.

Rome's settler will head south to the pinned city (off screen, see previous screenshots). Encampment will be completed next for the respective inspiration.
Aquileia's settler will likely go northwest of Dead Sea to seal off that area. The warrior at the top of the screenshot will have plenty of time to defog the area. I'll chop the forest 1W of city center into the settler to clear that tile for a Bath. Overall I'm looking at probably a 10-turn build time on the settler there. That timing will work out to proceed into Harbor/Bath.
Lugdunum will finish the half-built galley after the scout, then possibly ancient walls for the Engineering eureka.
Ravena is still shooting for EOT68 Pyramids. I'm planning to purchase the 3rd ring Wheat for the 6th farm for Feudalism inspiration (5th will be picked up in the south by Rome's settler).

I also need to keep an eye on the power ratings as the DOF's on my east and west wind down around T80. I signed DOF with Russia on T59 or 60. We both have a scout in each other's territory and that will help keep the tensions light. TheArchduke settled a [4th?] city such that my scout was completely trapped by Russian culture, and then extorted me for 10Icon_Gold to sign Open Borders this turn. You can see on the mini-map that I have uncovered a couple Russian cities. My plan is to make use of the 30-turn OB agreement to completely defog Russian territory for possible future military actions. That is a higher priority that simply scouting deep for the remaining contacts.

Foreign relations policy is currently to keep friendly relations until the land is filled up, with a side-order of avoiding being the target of Russian Cossacks ... meaning Cree is not an appealing mid-game target due to proximity to Russia. It's still early but Greece is starting to lag in culture and science output.

Any questions?
