Make BUG advisors super wide

With the current version of BUG I included all the features I wanted to include and when the next test game (PB48) is more or less concluded I will merge everything back to normal RtR, so that there is only one mod version again.

But there is one thing I would like to address before the merge. That is that some advisor screens look ugly on very wide screens. Namely the following:

Foreign Advisor - Active:

On a 16:9 screen

On a 4:3 screen

Foreign Advisor - Info:

On a 16:9 screen

On a 4:3 screen

Military Advisor - Deployment:

On a 16:9 screen

On a 4:3 screen

The main problem with all of these screens can be seen in the 16:9. There's a lot of unused space to the right, which gets even bigger on wider screen resolutions.

The question that remains is how to solve those issues, because there are some constrains:

  1. The screen still needs to work on a 4:3 screen.
  2. The reason why these screens are wider is because of adjustements to other sub menus in the same advisor. And my guess is that the size needs to be the same for all sub menus of one advisor.

Here are some of my suggestions to solve or at least improve on those issues:

Foreign Advisor - Active:

I would like to redo this screen completely and make it somewhat similar to the Info screen. I would get read of the purely text based display and would replace it with a column based approach, like this:

This would also get rid of the scroll bar that apears if you have to many deals to display.

Foreign Advisor - Info:

Unfortunately because of 4:3 we don't have a lot of space here. I only added a gold and gold per turn column (the same values as from the trade screen). After that the only thing to do is to stretch the display across the whole screen like BUG did with other screens:

Military Advisor - Deployment:

This is the hardest screen for me right now. You can't add any more info without a complete redo and I don't know how I should stretch this screen across the whole width.

Most importantly for all these implementations is that I didn't have a look at the code so far. So I don't know if those changes are doable.

I'm very open for any ideas or suggestions you come up with.

Hi Charriu ... re your PM ...

if I remember correctly, you were working on the BUG mod in the past - yep.  One of the founding members of the team and primarily responsible for enforcing the unaltered game play rule.  I also did a fair bit of interface work.

I'm just curious if the BUG development is still active

No.  Hasn't been active in years.  The CFC HOF people asked us to upgrade their mod with BUG and that was really the last push that we did.

would make sense to provide those changes to the whole BUG community?

Yes.  Not sure who you would give it too.  Try Lemon Merchant at CFC.  She has been the most recent active ... but mainly BAT.

With regards to the above, you should also pull in the original screens.  We (BUG) did try and enhance the screens you mentioned.  I wanted to get the F5 map as big as I could.  You might also want to break the list of units into two ... with the content controlled by the drop downs.  I hate having to scroll through 7000 units looking for my Super Medic.  Group 1 ... select mounted, Group 2 ... select chariot, Group 3(!) show all chariots.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

I got to work on two screens:

As you can see I added columns for the tradable gold and tradable gold per turn. These are the same infos you would get if you open the individual trade screen of every player.

As you can see I did a complete overhaul of the screen. Unfortunately I didn't find UI elements that supported my vision to the full extend, which you can see with the "Other" section. If you prefer the old screen you can deactivate this new screen with this setting in the BUG menu:

That's certainly strange as it seems other can see them, right?

In other news I worked on the Military Advisor:

As you can see I did not really do much except centering every UI element. This still leaves empty spaces, but at least it looks a little bit cleaner. I did read your post Ruff. Yes I could split the list of units into two, but I feel that people with higher screen resolutions would have an advantage with this, as the information is presented in a better way. For now I will leave it centered until I or somebody else comes up with an idea to scale this screen up.
