Part of the reason is that I was working a ton of overtime with no end in sight, I didn’t have time to put into proper planning and swung for the fenced with what looked best at the time.
My real mistake (I think) was not pushing the attack earlier. I opened up a huge MFG lead early with my Oracle > MC play to build IND forges. I then proceeded to squander 20 turns of the huge MFG on wealth and research builds to unlock Knights. I thought that the wealth and research combined with bulb of Machinery and true beeline (ignoring Construction, Aesthetics line, etc.) I would be able to get knights a solid margin ahead of the field. But in actuality I think I was less than 10 turns ahead of the next rival. The rapid tech pace early really surprised me, as did the tech pace later when it completely stalled out in the modern era.
I would have been better served researching Construction early and eating Elkad early with HA’s and Catapults with the huge MFG output.
