Interesting.  It looks like it's only the base game, not expansions, and the idea is definitely to be a loss leader for those and the DLC pass.

Do you know what this requires at runtime?  Is it still Steam, or whatever Epic's equivalent is, or neither, or both? (I bought Civ 5 from some other seller service and was surprised to find it was really just a Steam key.)

You can ditch the Epic Client as soon as you install it.

And holy crap it handles loss-of-focus in fullscreen windowed mode terribly. If I move the mouse to the other monitor even for an instant, there is about a 10% chance it locks up hard and makes me end-task it.

If I understand you right, go into the settings under Interface and disable "Scroll when Mouse at Edge". I play in windowed mode and don't have any issue and have multiple screens.
