So, wilcard game...

Man, do I feel ripped-off !  protest
My Mao first, turn 350 spaceship victory looked spot-on...
And even Brennus second, 15 wars was still in somewhat in play.

Instead, well. rant

So, things that didn't go as expected :
- Mao sending his settler east, and losing the race to Genghis. Sure, that secured him iron, but :
- Genghis stealing the gems spot, instead of settling the pigs spot to his south.
- Then Gilgamesh getting basically all of the green land to Mao's south and south/east.
=> That led to a weaker initial economy for Mao than I had thought, but he recovered nicely and ended with a monster tech advance, as predicted.
- Genghis declaring on Hammurabi was expected. Him redeclaring after 10 turns instead of attacking Mao was not.
- Toku attacking Hammurabi instead of Bismarck or Gilgamesh was also unexpected.
- Gilgamesh attacking Genghis instead of Toku or Brennus seemed random... but was probably made more likely by Genghis's unexpected gems spot.

All those elements combined resolved into :
- a much stronger Gilgamesh than he had any right to
- Hammurabi FTD instead of the much weaker Toku or Genghis
- Gilgamesh and Brennus being best buds instead of bitter enemies

And then, obviously...

Playoff Game One Picking Contest Entry Form

Congratulations to Delan and Bear as the winners of Game Eight's picking contest with 23 points. thumbsup Scoring was pretty high overall with an average score of 10.29 points thanks to some of the community favorites hitting in the leader scoring categories. The ending was, uh, unexpected and worth watching if you can spare the time. We are continuing with our normal Friday date for next week's game. Next week we start with the first playoff game as our returning winners come back for another round of action. Who do you have this week?

So I put together a spreadsheet with the number of times an AI has survived a game, put up against the first/second place finishes, their kills etc. Pretty interesting. Two things that stand out to me immediately are Mao, Darius, and Brennus. Mao for being tied for first in the number of games played... with only 1 first place finish to show for it. He has survived the most games, which makes sense because I feel like I'm constantly seeing this guy pop up in wildcard games. Mao actually leads the pack in surviving games haha. Darius has also somehow played in a bunch of games with not a lot to show for it. And Brennus is the leader in surviving games without finishing first or second - he seriously has 5 games now where he managed to not get killed, but not advance to the next round either.

Not that this needed anymore reinforcement, but this just highlights how absolutely terrible Sitting Bull is. Every other leader, across 5 seasons, has managed to survive a game or kill another AI. SB gets a flat 0 across the board.

Here's the google doc if anyone's interested in taking a look. Colored in Gold are the Pool 1 leaders and in Silver are the Pool 2 leaders according to the current (through the wildcard game of S5) Sulla rankings.

I propose a Huge map with the top six seeded leaders and 18 Sitting Bulls.

I would absolutely love to see 6 Sitting Bulls lose to Huyana or Justinian.

For Brennus, as far as I understand your table, he was killed only ONCE (game 1 season 4), but never manage to finish in the top 2 of his second game, when surviving is not enough to advance (being either wildcard or playoff) !

Close. He has one other death in playoff game 3 season 1 (the one column just points out an opening round death, as opposed to total deaths), but otherwise the guy has survived through every other season while only coming in second place twice (game 1 season 1 and game 6 season 2). Its almost at the point where it's not really a fluke anymore - the man just sort of hangs around in his games.

I suspect it's mostly luck, but he does have a few things going for him; a boring personality which can mostly keep up in tech and builds units but doesn't start stupid wars, a low peaceweight to redirect the real psychos away from him, and an otherwise forgettable UB which essentially acts like a mini-protective trait so long as he founds cities on hills.
