You should never take advice from a combo of sleep-deprived bloodthirsty daddies.. But honestly, those guys have been mostly invisible in this thread and not logged much into the game, but the macro discussions have been quite active in the background and this has again been a team effort. A team effort except for the excellent early micro that got you to the dominant position from where the fighting could begin... Always happy to chat about fighting people!

It’s a complex game! But not for everybody. While we, Commodore and Cornflakes have been fighting wars for the most of the game, Ruff has quietly improved his position and has currently the 2nd most population in the game and clearly the 2nd largest power in the game. After we took cities from both superdeath and Miguelito we are now pretty much Ruff’s only neighbor and our armies are destined to stare at each other until the end of the game.. And this is what is staring our Mids city: Not the most modern army, but you have to have some respect to catapults.. Ruff has been fairly passive all game, but do we want to count on him not engaging if we start a real war in the north against Commodore or Cornflakes? Well, we/I already said no couple of turns ago when we had a chance to push into Japan territory. Then we started shuffling some units for a potential Cornflakes backstab, but again fighting in the north when Ruff is staring at our Pyramids is a bit problematic.. The latest news is that Cornflakes is doing way better than we hoped in the north. Especially despite the fact that we retreated from Commodore border so that he could focus on defending.. I guess a 3-hour turn vs a 5-min turn leads to an advantage.. So we have the next problem growing in the north. Anyways, as CF and Commodore are busy in the north, we have an opportunity deal with out sourthern standoff and punish the no.2 power in the game. Even if not wise, this is definitely more fun than counting on Ruff watching us win from the sideline. We just caught a Ruff spy around Naga, but maybe he won’t be watching this unroaded hills tile.. Attacking into a city sitting on a hill with 50 % defenses with just 2-movers is not super-tempting, but Ruff only has 2 spears in the city and lots of catapults and WEs. A good composition for attacking out, but those are not the strongest city defenders.. So we decided to take the opportunity before we are facing a bunch of longbows or pikemen.. A lot of glowing units are dead and we only lost 5 knights vs. expected 6-7! We have now made Ruff officially into an enemy. But I guess we prefer an official enemy that has 29 less units to an unofficial enemy with catapults.. Next decision: Do we want to keep fighting Ruff now that we are here or is it time to disturb Cornflakes, the new no.2 power, before he gets to enjoy the rewards from his successful war. Switching out of Representation (and OR) hurt my capitalist soul, but Police State is pretty good as well.. We will finish Compass-Optics soon enough for Privateers and temporary naval dominance and after that we have pretty much every tech we need for now. But can you ever have too many units on a tight map? Some imagination needed to add 40ish Police State hammers to our MFG..
Finally caught up with this thread and had to remark on that horrific stretch of RNG earlier against Elkad. I guess naming your cities after STDs turned out to be kind of thematic in that he just wouldn't go away?
Great thread and great game so far Fintourist!

Thank you pindicator! Maybe that’s the lesson learned.. Next game our naming scheme will be STDs, or something even meaner.
Looking forward to reading your thread (how involved were you?). Should be full of drama as well. And from the distance it looked like many things were done well while some risks of course back-fired.. *** Re game: Travelling a bit so had to play a clumsy turn including minor misclicks + report must wait, but ended up razing an empty Ruff city from where he retreated.
I wasn't terribly involved and probably should have tried to be a little more hands on with giving advise. But I think Miguelito had some interesting ideas for strategy and he got to see how they played out in a cramped map of cutthroat opponents And while I had my own opinions about the controversial city placement they were minor. I almost certainly would have put my #3 city in a similar location if I had been playing the game instead of Miguelito. The map kind of forced him that way, like it led you north to Elkad's lands to get the good Pig location.

I have been travelling the last few days, so the reporting has been lacking despite the fact that there is quite a lot of stuff happening. On turn 159 we razed an empty city from retreating Ruff: We discussed making a move on Cardassia and Ruff's core, but slogging through Ruff's culture and 60 % defenses did not feel tempting. I think there are two ways to lose this game:
On the same turn we also settled the replacement of Miguelito's mega city: OH and Hitru were leaning towards taking more land from Ruff while I was getting itchy watching CF's lightly defended cities + Babylon scoring victories on the battlefield. Bloodthirsty daddies were not exactly feeling my desire to attack CF.. Old Harry: How did opening up the Russian front go for the Nazis again? Hitru: Usually one tries to delay the dogpile... As a sideshow Ruff was only keeping a sentry chariot in "T-Rogoran" and he did not notice us putting a 3-move galley in "Satyr": Flawless win! Let's see if the mace manages to take out another unit.. Not sure if successful raze got the daddies going, but while I did not get encouragement, I took it as a lightly nod when OH and Hitru promised to support me in the forth-coming self-inflicted dogpile.. (For me the final straw was that Commodore's power ratio dropped to 3.0 after CF took another city last turn, a sign of Japan pretty much collapsing) So here we go: Killed a longbow with an amphi knight and captured Resistance. We will finish Optics this turn, which gets us to Privateers. That should make holding the city feasible. Let's see if we can take the other island city as well. Next we killed a knight and a bow in Sell High (city razed): And a longbow in Confirmation (city razed): Four battles between 65-90 % odds and no losses! Had to delete two victorious knights though.. Initial plan was to put a stack of catapults next to Buy Low, one of Cornflakes' mega cities. In the end I decided to just go brute force with the expected result of three dead knights: And got the expected result I guess we could have kept the city, but ended up razing this monster as well. Reason: Our economic position is starting to be pretty dominant (even without Representation active, btw we also reached the domination pop limit), so it should be enough to disengage as cleanly as possible and just try to fend off any counter-attacks from Ruff and Cornflakes. Those guys piling on us simultaneously can still put us into tricky spots, but as long as we don't take losing battles and waste our army, it should be feasible to fight off a dogpile. |
