Quote:Sorry to bother again, while i know it is dependant on sutuations and encounters, what's the best strategy on Lunatic to clear high-tier lairs and wizard towers as soon as possible?
Any unit that can do wonders ammassed? Preferably an all-around army able to tackle every lair once fully recruited, but i know there is no "one wins all" strat.

Assuming you don't care which tower is breached, then the most effective thing I have found is Web + Earth to mud against units without ranged attacks. You can send in a stack of magicians against anything that gets stuck in mud and slowly whittle them down. Having Fire Bolt is good for this as it's incredibly cost effective damage. Finding the right tower is key since you need different strategies to take down different monsters. Halfling Slingers or Elven Longbowmen w/ any of Flame blade/Heroism/Holy Weapon are quite effective, but being able to cast earth to mud or web twice with magicians is really helpful.

Web + Life Drain + Warp Creature can work well as well if you have enough casting skill/luck, this works better with a hero that has -spell save items, and much better the more lone angel/efreet monster dens you can find. If you find a den with a single efreet/angel and some low tier monsters early then you can speed everything up quite a bit. Angel's are generally harder because they often pair with creatures that boost resistance which makes landing the warp creature harder. Killing all the minions first in that case will make it easier, but will likely cost you a good number of units in the process.

Simply massing something strong and relatively cheap like Barbarian Berserkers or Gnoll Wolf Riders can work against the right enemy. If you're buffing units then Halberdiers can work, races with bonus to attack/defend/to hit (Klackons, Gnoll, Barbarian, etc.) work well.

Generally the trick is to find a tower with creatures in it that match up poorly against your strategy, but Web and Warp Creature in particular are good ways to take out tough enemies, and finding a tower with no ranged attack means you can more effectively suicide troops to take them out.

Are there any specific guides for mono book wizards? For example, I was surprised to hear that for Life late game, the best strategy is to spam Archangels to support heroes. I would have thought that you could make regular units strong enough to take down most garrisons with Heroism, Invulnerability, High Prayer etc

Is the effect of the "blur" magic cumulative?

The lousy thing about building up an amazing "unstoppable" buffed army is that it takes you tons of mana and time to cast all the spells, but enemy wizards will dispel multiple of those enchantments on a unit in a single combat round for a paltry amount of mana.  Quickly, your "unstoppable" buffed army becomes a regular one... very disappointing.

Blur stacks with Invisibility (30% if you have both), but as far as I'm aware there is no other way to have multiple blur effects.

There are no guides that I'm aware of, but I'm sure you will get some answers if you ask for favorite late game strategies for X realm. You can even look at the realm threads to see what is/was considered overpowered.

Depending on your difficulty, you can make a lot of strategies work. Once you go past advanced you have to have some amount of optimization, but you can win on advanced with some silly (and very suboptimal) stuff. You can win with any strategy on Normal as long as you understand some fundamental game concepts.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about finding the "best" strategy unless you want to try winning Lunatic. Even then, getting down the core concepts of the game and how to optimize them will give you a better chance then using the best strategy without an idea of when to buy buildings, which units to build and when, what things you need to counter and when and how, when and which AIs to bribe, etc.

What do I need to do to get this to work properly on an actual DOS 6.22 machine (a Pentium 133 w/ 16MB of RAM and a Yamaha Audician 32 SB clone)? I tried just copying the files from my GOG install, and I keep running into 'Insufficient memory' errors, even though I have around 617k of free memory (it says I need 583k, which I clearly have). The original MoM files (I think mine are version 1.30, might be 1.31) don't have this problem. At first, it was happening just after the intro video, but I managed to get it past that and to the main menu by freeing up a tiny bit more memory, but after selecting the game options and picking my wizard & starting race, it happens again.

It's been a while since I used real DOS.
I checked DOSBOX and it says 632k free memory so that 15k difference might explain it.

I'm guessing the extra memory used by allowing 2000 units in play instead of 1000 might be the reason for the difference but I'm not entirely sure.

What are the rules for getting spells when banishing an enemy? I banished Horus and he's got Incarnation and I've got 5 life books, but I didn't receive any spells (although I don't think I saw the message "you find no spells in the ruins").

He also has flying fortress and I've got 2 sorcery books, but I guess that is not enough.

I'm playing 6.0.2

You can only find spells from each wizard once, so if you banished him before, you don't get any.
