I'm more inclined towards PLAY -> BELL as our remaining Resort words. (BELL for bellhop, and buzzing the bell for service.) I don't think that the secondary meaning of Resort (as "fallback") was intended, because PLOT would have been at least as strong as RULER in that case, and PLOT is blue.

Since I am still not sure what Pokies refers to, I don't have a third guess.

HAM, RULER...?

We've got a 3-word clue, so one of our previous guesses must be right. And it's gotta be PLAY, both as the one word that thrawn and I had in common, as well as the word we most discussed last round, and nearly pointed to before ATLANTIS.

As for Slicer:
You slice HAM into PARTs.
And since the clue is Slicer, not Sliced, we are being directed to the machine that does the slicing.
Which means ENGINE.

No idea which one of those is supposed to be our fifth Resort word, so I'm not brimming with confidence...

I wonder if Kiwi was supposed to be a Pokies word, since the bird has a long beak. If Pokies was indeed a "thing you poke with" clue, was it HORN, KIWI, RULER??

I really like HAM and ENGINE, especially because the word is Slicer, which implies the actual equipment (I don't have much experience with it, but I guess those things have engines).

POINT TO HAM

We all have it, so lets take it out of the way. Not cluing anything else for now, since I think it's best to wait for Commodore.

One thing I'm thinking about is: why did Superdeath go with a 2 clue? Either their last word has nothing to do with PLOT and LOCK, as in, really impossible to clue together, or he was very, very confident we couldn't finish with another clue.

Well, I think RULER cannot be red, as Superdeath wouldn't risk that 2-clue otherwise. Ruler of the land is pretty common. Why risk it, if he was going for 2 clues to guess 3 words? Why not leave it for red to perhaps take it out of the board first? In that sense, I think we can really take RULER out of the equation.

Slicer has a SUPERHERO feel to it. And such a meaning would make sense with superdeath's decision to go for a safe clue.

I'm ok with those 4 suggested by thrawn. But I think there's a case that we need to think a bit more outside the box, considering how the game went.

"Superdeath seems to have acquired a rep for aggression somehow. [Image: noidea.gif] In this game that's going to help us because he's going to go to the negotiating table with twitchy eyes and slightly too wide a grin and terrify the neighbors into favorable border agreements, one-sided tech deals and staggered NAPs."
