[SPOILERS] Cornflakes PB53

The first CKN marched this turn in China scared I will have 5 catapult minimum and as many HA. I haven’t spotted any Chinese catapults so that’s good.

What would you say you love, and hate about this map. And what would you have me change mapmaker wise in the future?
"Superdeath seems to have acquired a rep for aggression somehow. [Image: noidea.gif] In this game that's going to help us because he's going to go to the negotiating table with twitchy eyes and slightly too wide a grin and terrify the neighbors into favorable border agreements, one-sided tech deals and staggered NAPs."

T75 update ... note, even though reminded in the tech thread I forgot about taking all the requested screenshots until my finger was descending on the ENTER key, too late to stop. So my screenshots are from T76 but relatively close. At turn roll I grew about 4 pop and completed spear + 2 HA + WE so subtract that (I whipped 4 pop on T75 so account that however you wish)

Scooter has suggested war vs. TBS a few times, and added a 12-turn counter about 10 turns ago. Scooter can't reasonably gain much from war with TBS so I interpreted that as more "hey, look over there at TBS while I kill someone (AT?) with CKN". However TBS canceled Gems trade this turn and that changed the calculus. I have a stack of catapults and HA assembling already as a defensive force and am seriously considering claiming those gems + silver myself. I'm 2nd in power as of T76 with 1.19 ratio vs. TBS.

I tried to be reasonable and offered the gems tribute from TBS for OB. TBS rejected and offered a luxury trade. In response I decided that it is time to own the gems mine myself. The die is cast. I took 1st in turn order which gives TBS an extra round of whipping but I really very much prefer not having to wait on someone to play the turn.

Carthage GNP has been very poor until recently due to expansion, and somewhat a result of hobbling development with the 2 city razes earlier. However while fog-gazing for Stables I noticed what appears to be an Academy in Leptis. That would correspond to the recent spike in GNP that I have observed. I have not seen any HA/stabled and since tech-leader Scooter doesn't have Construction yet (no bridges) I don't think TBS would either.

Goal for this war is securing Gems + Silver at Thapsus, which includes removing culture from the former-barb city in the east whether through my own or Scooter's conquest. I'm eyeballing an artist bomb of Thapsus in the future if Scooter takes the former-barb city which should allow for culture-flipping. Razing Leptis (again) and capturing the Carthage marble city are on the table, but I think I'll try suing for peace after Thapsus and see if TBS will give me 10 turns to build up a more formidable

I'm toying with the idea of hitting Construction next with the Trade Mission gold. The turn TBS cancels that silver "tribute" I will be whipping the newly-unhappy rioters into military to claim Thapsus for the luxuries (each city already has an HA lined up for immediate 2-whip). If TBS cancels silver I'll whip as hard as necessary, down to size 0 happy cap if needed. That option/threat is why I want Construction in my back pocket, even ahead of Currency.

The trigger pull may be sudden, but the overall action is definitely premeditated  shhh I hit Construction ahead of Calendar and Currency, rolled out some catapults and HA into a mobile stack, and placed them such that they could react immediately. The 12 turns signaled from Scooter was up in 3 turns (T80) so I had been toying with plans for war anyway. Ideally I would have liked a couple more turns to get those galleys into the western inland sea and threaten Leptis amphibiously. But TBS looks weak now with long supply lines. So I use my galleys to assist in consolidating everything on the eastern front ASAP. The galleys will probably move through Leptis and threaten the southern island.

One thing I forgot to mention is that Scooter’s gold shot up to 580 making about 120/turn. So he was very close to completing MoM when I rushed it.

Thapsus secured with no bloodshed, Carthage culture removed from adjacent tiles including silver which would have been swallowed in culture from Ligurian. No revolt and Granary + Library(!!!) intact. Culture from the library will maintain control of silver and claim the gems from Khmer culture in reasonable timeframe. I'm still light on land area in the long term, but a grinding war with Carthage is not a winning strategy. Take the city, use the luxuries to grow, give Carthage an out with a still-winnable position and one of the game's weakest nations (Mr. Cairo/Khmer) as a neighbor. And reposition my army to ensure China doesn't take advantage. I haven't finished the turn, need to think about how I position everything and what I'll build in my cities.

Good work. What do you see happening with Ligurian?
