I guess this is starting up, kind of.
I kind of think this is a dumb song, but it's what came to mind and I'm all about being inspired by stuff. So, I guess my cities are going to driving songs. Any suggestions for songs? There's a lot of possibilities.

So, my ventures into aggressive have turned out.... poorly.
From what GKC is saying, it's low sea levels with a lot of land between caps. Expansion seems good
My civ password is, as always: AT

I had some thoughts that you could exploit the free win with a settler, but you can't - it doesn't work if you attack out and it doesn't provide immunity to barb attacks. Enough units attack and they will defeat your guy. But it certainly makes settling early in the game safer.
Apparently, now Lumbermills are available at metal casting. I guess that's good. Are they worth it? I mean, vs chopping and getting 20/30 hammers and then slaving a lot. Though, with a +1 at machinery, from a plains that's a 5 yield tile, which is pretty good. grass forest is a food neutral 3 hammers, plus .5 a health. Still not sure they are useful

arabia:
March is a nice promo for a camel archer - hit knights fast and you can take out a lot of people pretty fast.
Celts:
UB makes it kind of creative, but walls isn't really a gret building in and of itself for expansion, unlike the original Inca granary.
America:
The new UB needs someone to try it. Seems pretty good. The UU seems kind of meh.
Byzantium:
UB seems kind of meh, but better. UU is still awesome
China:
Does the Cho-ko-nu need to get BETTER? Imp/pro china would equal a lot of GG
Germany
Still seems too much of a late bloomer
Inca:
Played in PB47
India
Seems ok.
Japan
tried and failed in PB53
Maya:
PB 52
NA
Everything screws with Native America - I feel like we always miss making it useful. The Civ III equivalent was awesome - we should make it a 7 strength HA (or a C1) and then everyone will want it. This? Seems like it should pair with charismatic to make for 2 promos for gunpowder units.
Russia
Mid-late game power
Spain
Meh
Zulu
meh
Traits
Expansion traits:
Good expansion - expansion needs settlers, workers, granaries and border pops.
Imp (cheap settlers)
Creative (border pops)
Decent
Expansive (cheap granaries)
Charismatic (cheap monuments for border pops)
Sort of expansion
Protective (not expansion, but does passive commerce as you expand is good)
Spiritual (kind of - a turn or two faster in the early game)
Not really expansion
Aggressive
Industrious
Organized
Philosophical
Financial
I might go creative, which I haven't done in a long time (maybe ever?) and philosophical.

Lumbermills get +1 commerce from Machinery
CKN didn't get better. That's a mistake in the changelog. They now do max 40% collateral. Thanks for pointing that out.

Oh yeah - commerce. Well, that's not as good, but it does help. a plains forest becomes similar to a riverside grass mine. Might help.
One of the things I really need to figure out is these changes make dropping out of slavery good. I do like the RtR change to make slavery less useful

So, it looks like the best short-mid term builder trait is actually industrious, cause forges are really expensive. Add in the reduction in value of stone/marble, and ind looks great.
I played ind in pb53, but I sucked, so I think I'll probably do that again.
Dunno about the other one - phil seems interesting, especially cause it's one of the new ones, but that makes for a very slow start. Pro, maybe? imp is good.

So, right now, I'm torn between IMP/Phil and Ind/phi.
Ind/phi, my plan would be to expand and then try to bulb currency, machinery and theology in about a 30 turn window while building great lighthouse, kicking off a GA and pounding out some camel archers.
imp/phi plan would be to expand, build some theaters and pop out GA and light off culture bombs as I go to conquer someone. Is that a good plan? Probably not. Woudl it be fun? probably.
I do like the Ind/phi plan. Looking at others still, though.

Borsche has been playing an amazing IND/PHI game on badgame.

So, arabia would be nice, but it depends on the start, I think. It starts very slow. Start techs still matter, I guess.
