The Original Diablo Is Now Playable In Your Browser

Rivsoft makes the game playable for anyone with a web browser over at diablo.rivsoft.net

This is a free shareware version, iirc, known as Diablo Spawn, which only the warrior class is available to play and only a couple of levels.
However, if you have an actual copy of Diablo, you can drag the DIABDAT.MPQ file from the game’s installed folder to begin playing that version of the game in the browser instead.

Having Diablo playable in a web browser also makes it perfect for brief breaks at work or school. Just don’t forget to have Alt +F4 ready. smoke

Heh. It does give an idea of just how far hardware capabilities have come over the years. I never played the original Diablo until recently, but I recall reading that it was pretty resource-intensive for its time and required pretty good hardware.

Interestingly, the browser version runs better for me than the GOG version: I had big troubles with the speed of the mouse cursor, which seems to be no issue in the browser version. smile thumbsup

Best advantage of the browser version so far is that it allows multitasking, easy switching between apps smile

Sorry I couldn't check my computer for files, I just switched to a new computer and have not reinstalled many apps yet. It's possible they are on Rivsoft's servers, even.

Welp, I searched on google and apparently it saves in the browser cache. It also works (relatively) well on mobile!

Did a quick run through Dlvls 1-6 at work since literally nothing was happening and there was no supervision, and no tasks to perform. No need for administrator rights, just have the DIABDAT.mpq, and play, play, play.

Picked rogue, quests were Butcher (The cleaver fetched some nice money), Poisoned Water Supply (Ring of truth is a good ring this early on), Gharbad (Amulet of Vitality and some junk), Magic Rock and Arkaine's Valor (Sold the empyrean band) so far. Bought a warrior bow of flame and I'm going through the levels rather easily. I dread to think how MP would go with a rogue, and still don't know how you all managed your bow rogues and how you did enough damage to avoid being overwhelmed (or how you picked things off one by one, avoided waking things up, especially in caves/hell)

D1 with a rogue is all about tactical - you funnel everything you can through doorways to shoot one at a time. In the caves you shoot everything across lava gaps. Hell is harder; you try to string out packs to shoot as they come around a corner. The Stone Curse spell can help a lot.

Eventually you read enough books of Fireball and Chain Lightning that that becomes more offense than the bow itself. Overall the most effective way to play a rogue past clvl 25 or so is to pretend you're a mage, sometimes even with Mana Shield.

Multiplayer with friendly fire is quite a challenge, yup.
