Lets be honest. Immigration is not about resources. Republicans just like Democrats can somehow always find resources and justify spending for their own projects. Republicans are just better at PR about the deficit (btw I hate them both for this; many countries have fallen by thinking their resources are limitless). Immigration debate is really about fear. Fear of the them, fear of the other, fear of change. We are actually probably living in an enlightened age that we can even get 1 party to advocate for people only trying to make a better life for themselves and who are in situations we can't fathom typing at our computers. It is no shock however that there is a party that will naturally justify this fear people have and use it.

Sorry to hear about your mother, T-Hawk. I hope and wissh for all the best for you and your family.
Personally, I've learned from this thread, even though it made me fell bad from time to time. I understand, I respect and I empathize more with the conservative side after reading the thoughts here.

It’s not black & white, there are legitimate concerns on breaking the social safety net (see Denmark) and xenophobic concerns on fear of losing national identity. And before we applaud Democrats, let’s ponder how the parties' stance would shift if immigrant voting patterns were flipped.

Very, very sorry to hear about your mom T-Hawk. My dad had to delay non life threatening knee surgery, and it was very difficult. I cannot imagine what you are going through.

I do not believe this will happen. I believe this is bluster to keep up his image as a strong-man that his base wants to see. I don't believe Trump will keep power if he legitimately loses the election. Even Republicans ultimately care more about the rule of law and order than about Trump himself.
Love him or hate him, you have to admire that he's done or tried to do basically everything he's ever promised, even the "there's no way he really means that" things. I think he fully intends to stay in power by shenanigans if he can get away with it, and I've lost faith in the Republican Party's will to reign him in. It strikes at the heart of our Democracy, and even if I agreed with him on every other issue I'd vote against him for this reason alone. I don't want to be Belarus or Venezuela.

Me too Ichabod. I feel Brick stepped in at the right time and with the right message to keep things civil, by Internet standards at least.

Ignoring the pandemic experts is necessary because they care only about their narrow expertise. Plenty of lives have and will be lost because business are destroyed by forced lockdowns, people filled with paranoia and too afraid to seek medical help, routine medical services not available and high unemployment.
A leader has to balance all these concerns and not yield to one group of screaming experts; the cowardly leader diverts all blame to 'the experts' and washes his hands of all the blood and damage of lockdowns.

Communal solidarity is actually important to long-term health of a group, and most people instinctively react in ways to certain things that threaten it (aka being racist). You could say that they are born this way, and this sort of group self-defense is evolutionarily selected for to preserve the health of the group, etc., which is why all societies at all times in all places display it.

An outsider's point of view:
In this enlightened age, white(-dominated) societies are trying to use education (aka indoctrination) to reverse one of the deepest natural instincts. The rest of the world, while generally friendly to tourist and guests, continues to harbour emnity for other ethnicities and races as they have for millennia.
It cannot be denied that the white peoples' experiment of antiracism is fascinating, but otherwise the rest of the world does not care.

This is what happens when you ask for an honest opinion.
But never mind the outsider, back to the regular schedule of Trump-cope and sh*tting on others for not being sufficiently enlightened.
