I think I turned that back to BtS levels. I will investigate.

I checked and it's still at the normal >1/3 water tiles from BtS. I also made sure to start a highlands map with mostly land and circumnavigation didn't trigger there.

3 xp and 6 great general points?
The idea is that we gained him not knowing that we are heading for gold right now, which is a desirable contested site. There are definitely players I would have discouraged this move against but Serdoa isn't really the type to hold a gamelong grudge because we killed a scout.

I guess I can add that to my list. Although having there not be circumnavigation actually might be good on this map, with there being pre-optics routes

Question: should the players be informed of this? People might make decisions based on the assumption that they can (workboat trying to island hop / early caravels)

Just for the sake of clarity I was definitely not *complaining* about the map! It might be perfectly balanced for what I know! I think SD's border towards NobleGas is objectively quite tricky and vulnerable, but that's just one of the fronts..

I have high hopes that this game will become quite an entertaining show.
IMP leaders (Rusten and Lewwyn) are of course leading the pack for now. Rusten is playing a sort of gamble by going for strong greedy city sites in every direction. It's a play-for-win type of approach. In some games you will be punished by a pissed off neighbor, sometimes you are given enough time to turn into a powerhouse. Lewwyn went for all-settlers-no-workers opening, which looks weird, but is surely fine thanks to the trait. Let's see how he will be able to maintain the snowball.
I fear that BoB's play turns out to be the biggest imbalancing factor in this game. He does not update that much, but the micro looks quite questionable. Rusten and Lewwyn might be the winners of the geopolitical lottery. At the same time Serdoa is surely the loser of the same lottery. Both Rusten and NobleGas are settling in his face and SD should definitely still grab a stone city between him and Serdoa. Simply due to historical performances I still expect Serdoa to put up a good fight.
As for SDs start, I had way less time for micro planning than I hoped + I think that SD has quite a crippled start with luxuries when compared to other starts sporting multiple metals. However, I think his position is still good enough that he should be competitive in the mid game.. So my fingers are crossed for all kinds of SD shenanigans! I admit that a chance of observing some SD-generated mid game chaos with this field was a significant motivation factor for my early dedlurking
NobleGas crippled their early game with the Byzantium pic (probably more than I would have dared), but as those guys are putting in the effort, I completely expect them to still make stuff happen with cataphracts.
Any other lurker observations?
