It also wouldn't surprise me if these people snap back to voting straight-ticket Republican the second someone who isn't a drooling fascist is on the ballot.
Yep. Those who aren't directly implicated (Trump, his family, people who were arrested after the riot or identified inside the Capitol, maybe Hawley and Cruz, maybe the GOP House members) can likely escape classification as a drooling fascist. Most Republicans are going to vote for the candidate that aligns with their interests. Who wouldn't? Especially so after a period of time when Democrats are going to control both chambers of Congress and the Presidency. Mainline Republicans are going to get agitated about the usual things that agitate them.
Quote:But you also don't need all that many conservatives to decide they're just going to stay home to lock the Republican Party out of contention in close elections, so I do think there's going to be significant internal pressure for reform.
There's some evidence of this in the Georgia runoffs how turnout was down because of Trump's claims about the stolen election which discouraged voters. Hell, it's an open question if you could call those people dissuaded by Trump to not vote GOP voters.
It's truly depressing to see how many folks attempt to justify or excuse what happened on 1/6/2021. I am very worried about the immediate future.

I was watching the debate on CSPAN; Hawley was the only Senator to speak directly into the camera, the rest were speaking to their colleagues. I think that tells you all you need to know.
I watched too. I agree. I actually felt bad for him two days prior when people were protesting at his house.

Murkowski is:
1) Calling on Trump to resign
2) Considering switching to an Independent (which would mean she'd caucus with the Dems).

I've heard several people express similar sentiments lately, but I'm actually less concerned now than I was even a few weeks ago; I think the odds large-scale, armed Trumpist insurrection actually accomplishing anything are essentially none, while the likelihood of it being crushed by the military have risen. Similarly, though I don't believe it was ever particularly likely to begin with, I think the potential for Trump to declare martial law in some sort of last-gasp ultimate coup attempt is now very low.
However, I live in an overwhelmingly blue area, and am well-equipped for self-defense. I'm not sure I'd feel so sanguine if I, say, lived in rural Texas and was one of those liberals who had deluded themselves into believing firearms were inherently evil.

Trump banned from Twitter! GOP should hold on 'till 2028 when they lose TX, DEMs break the third term curse and win with a progressive. This will make them nuke the filibuster.
AK wouldn't nuke filibuster, even if she switches, so GOP stays alive.

Of all your prophecies, I like this one best.

It'll be Harris running in 2024 and 2028. 4 years after this mess is going to take too much out of Biden and he's going to know that he won't be able to handle 4 more.

The first thing the Dems need to do is hold onto the Senate and House in 2022. I think the past three presidents had their party in control of Congress at the start of their term and at least one of those flipped at their midterm election.

This link has interesting information. Removal from office was never apparently possible due to the procedural posture of the Senate after the joint session ended on 1/7.
Quote:"Yet even if it receives articles of impeachment from the House, the Senate cannot begin the trial until January 20. This is because the Senate is not currently in session. It will next convene in pro forma sessions on January 8, 12, and 15 before reconvening in regular session again on January 19. And the unanimous consent agreement that set up the pro forma sessions explicitly bars the Senate from conducting business."

Why all senators agreed to this posture with the knowledge that impeachment proceedings were likely is fascinating.
