[PB59] Charriu welcomes all the townfolk

Well hello folks.

Just realized that my last PB (52) just finished in November 2020. Since then 6 more PBs started and finished; we are definitely crazy for more civ 4 in these times.

Normally I would do bigger paused between PBs, but you've gotta play a big PB when it appears. Actually this is one item on my civ4 bucket list: Play in one bigger PB. smile

The way I reported PB52 was in perfect balance for me. I never felt totally stressed out. So expect the following again:
  • I won't report every single turn
  • Same crazy micro managment spreadsheet: I've updated my spreadsheet, so that it will work even better, while also making life easier for me.
  • (Almost) no sims: I will actually run almost no sims this game, because my spreadsheet got that good already. I remember back in PB52 I stopped running sims about T50 or so, but I used my spreadsheet up to T110 or so. Expect more of that.
  • C&D: This very tedious for me and the benefit is smaller. With no score and the know easy display of KTB it should be a lot easier to track tech across the board.
I've also had an idea for a naming scheme. This time I will be running town names from games I liked with a special focus of towns that were cool or awesome in one way or another.

Other then that expect the usual stuff from me.

When do Barbs Enter Our Borders
When do Barbs Appear

Barb spawning mechanics (stolen from SevenSpirits):
Barbs are spawned for each landmass individually. The game will spawn barbs up to a max of one barb per 50 (on prince) unowned tiles on the landmass. This is why islands (smaller than 50 tiles) won't get barbs.

At other difficulties, unowned land tiles per barb unit:

Noble: 60
Prince: 50
Monarch: 40
Emperor: 35
Immortal: 30
Deity: 25

Also: how many barbs spawn per turn on a landmass? It's one, plus one more for every four missing units. So if a landmass supports 20 barbs, and there are currently 4 on it, then there are 16 missing, so 1+4=5 will be created.

Just quoting my summary from PB52 in hopes that I avoid some of my mistakes from back then:

(November 1st, 2020, 17:20)Charriu Wrote: Summary:

Here I want to give a short list of the major and minor things I did wrong. I already talked in detail about the major problems in my last post, so I will keep it short. I also want to mention what went right. Destilling from this I want to make a list of things I want to improve in in my next games. Lastly a short list of things I noticed, disliked etc.

Major problems:
  • Economic break down before Currency
  • Being pink dotted by Jowy
  • Being attacked by AT
  • Great Person generation

Minor problems:
  • A bit too few workers at times, mainly because I needed to expand fast against my IMP neighbor.
  • Build Moai sooner
  • Handling of the second half of early war against Mjmd (lost a worker)

Things I did right:
  • Surviving a 2v1 dogpile somewhat successful
  • Overall city placement was good
  • Early successful war against a pink dotter (Mjmd) secured some important city spots.
  • Early expansion was good.
  • PRO was awesome for this. EXP was helpful, but the lack of coastal cities hurt a bit.
  • Celts were an interesting and fun ride

Things to look out for in the next games:
  • Never settle CommandoPygmies again
  • Try camera flying for exploration
  • More military, less buildings
  • Improve GP farming
  • Give religion more thought, before going for it.

And lastly some additional things, I noticed:
  • I didn't like my city naming scheme. I think shorter names work better for me.
  • I liked my reporting style, or better phrased it wasn't that time consuming this time.
  • I improved my planning tool further

I hope I don't get a civ that I recently changed or that wasn't played very often. Mainly because these PBs are one way to get opinions about the civs from other players not following the development closely. Other then that I will try to handle this PB a bit more casual as that seems to be the only sane way to handle a big PB like this. The most likely way somebody will win this PB is either by culture, space or diplomacy aka everybody is annoyed and concedes to the leading player. Most likely the last one. I think in our current state of meta the biggest struggle for culture, space or any other "natural" winning condition isn't really the win condition itself, but rather preventing the game to end long before that due to a concession. That's why it will always be important to stay strong enough to prevent a concession and defend all other players that want to force a concession by attacking contenders aka kingmaking.

Your first Civ choice: Greece

Your first leader choices: Ramesses, Huayna Capac

Starting screenshots will be posted in a couple days. You may wait to finalize a choice until then. You may reject or accept any of these choices. You will have a max of 2 more choices of civ and a max of 4 more leaders.

So far I like what I'm given. Here are my thoughts about the two leaders:

Huayna Capac (IND/FIN)

Playing IND will be interesting as I haven't done this before. FIN feels a bit boring to me right now. I do think that IND will give me the chance to get some wonders in this big field. With IND I also see the possibility to play towards one of the few winning conditions that are possible in this big PB: Culture victory. The only problem with Huayna is that the synergy between IND and FIN is not as strong as the synergy between IND and SPI. So let's talk about...

Ramesses (IND/SPI)

Everything I said about IND applies here too. The great thing about those traits is that a lot of techs that unlock wonders or civics are either the same tech or on the same tech path, so there is a lot of synergy. In addition if I want to play for culture SPI is also a great trait to have as going for religion not only provides the happiness there, but also the culture needed for that victory. I also like the challenge of planning out the civic switches and with my improved planning tool I feel up for that. One of the early goals with this would be Monarchy/Theology and Civil Service so that one could start switching around civics more often. In addition to all of this, a food heavy capitol will also be great with SPI and the possibility to whip the first settler. So far I have a very good feeling for Ramesses.

Now Greece is still debatable, mainly because without a screenshot the worth of this civ can't be fully determined. I like the Odeon especially if I go for a culture victory. More culture and artist is always great there. Having Odeons in my city will also take care of any happiness problems when I will run the culture slider for the final turns. The new Phalanx will be great to protect from almost everything in the early turns and it will even perform well enough against knights. It will also force me to settle more hills which will be better for a later defensive-culture driven game. One of the downsides of Greece for me personally of course is that I won't get feedback about this civ from other players. mischief

More info will come with the screenshot I guess.
