I haven't been updating much, mainly because of stuff outside of the game. Just busy. Also, there's not a lot interesting going on. Tarkeel has built about every wonder there is and has kicked off something like 8 GAs. (that may be an exaggeration)
From my perspective, it looks like Tarkeel is about to rip into my poorly defended civ and blow me up. I suspect I'll get by everyone else. I managed to let my power go way down (mainly by not paying attention, but also by falling behind in tech) Both Tarkeel and MrCairo have cuirassiers, so I am guessing I get from both sides.

I think Tarkeel is being too cautious in his conquering. He just took Nale, losing 2 catapults. he has curaissers and cavalry, against praets and mustets!! The big problem is that I might get to grenadiers, which are much tougher. He really should just be sweeping my cities.
the main thing is that SD and Mr Cairo are showing signs of attacking me, which means that Tarkeel may not get all the cities.
I should say that my thoughts on the matter may not be the best, since I keep getting myself rolled up in games recently

I was a little worried it would be a slow death, but both SD and Mr Cairo have jumped in, so no worries there

So, what happened?
I think there were several issues:
1) Rome was a mistake. Praets are good, but it's a big map and they are slow. The slowness is the problem. The Forum is not good enough to carry a civ.
2) Attacking was a mistake. With this map, I should have expanded peacefully, scared the pants off of people, maybe conquered people with praets, and done some sea invasions.
3) If I was going to attack, I should have built my forces in such a way that Tarkeel didn't know they were coming - either without OB or in the middle of the civ.
4) But really, go back to 1 and 2.
I shouldn't have ignored religion. I didn't need it for the happy, but for GP - I ran into problems with too many scientists and nothing else for a 2nd GA.
Also, I (once again) did not defend border cities very well.
I think Tarkeel has played a very nice game

Having a 8 power unit for 45 hammers is amazing. There is absolutely no need to ram them into a border city on turn 110.
I don't understand the point about religion. Most of the early buildings have specialist slots. There is also caste system.

yes. I agree with your first statement.
Actually (and I guess that got lost somehow), the main thing I missed from religion was OR and cheaper infrastructure.
And yes - a lot of early buildings have specialists, including the forum, which was my UB.
but really - the decision to attack with praets, especially the way I did, was my main mistake. Plus, probably, not picking up grenadiers 10 turns before being attacked with curaissers and cavalry.

Ah, I understand what you are saying now re the specialists.
I think cannons would have been more useful for defense. Grenadiers would have helped too of course.
