Glad to hear that, vanrober!

Actually, I'm pretty sure naufrager can't get my capital (again) unless he brings another large stack up. By giving me all this time to build up cities and population he has let me gain a lot of population that I can quickly turn into catapults and war elephants. Perhaps he doesn't expect me to whip as hard as I have been? But honestly, if I want to I can hold out until at least knights now. Possibly Gunpowder. Or Naufrager can just throw a TON of units at me. He has the capability of doing that, since he has double my lands. But does he have the willpower?

I've learned a lot of war in civ is having the willpower to destroy your own sandcastles. Whip those pretty cities down, build up that anger on defense. Whip those cities down and make decisive attacks on offense - especially if you can out-produce your opponent.

Turn 122 in the retraction of my previous post

Turns out naufrager is committing enough troops to this after all.

The horse archers came up and joined the party. Great coordination of troops, naufrager. (Seriously, I hope you guys are giving him kudos in the lurker thread because he might have been gifted the first attack by Amicalola but he is really making it count ever since.) That plus the additional catapults and units coming up behind tells me we aren't keeping the capital even if we made our stand there. Right now if he moves everything up next turn next to the capital then I will have to retreat or lose my army. Maybe if I had another half dozen catapults I could try to attack. So I didn't even bother positioning them where they could hit his stuff if he advanced.

Big decision next turn will be whether or not I try to throw some catapults at the northern smaller stack and kill it. That could potentially slow down naufrager's advance. But I think I'm going to go with my original plan of just retreating back to the border with Amicalola and then repaying that debt I owe him.

Looks like we won't have to worry about someone covering our turns any time soon.

In further news, we are likely not the next person eliminated either:

Rather shocked at how fast Cairo has fallen apart. The island I was going to capture back last turn was taken this turn by User/kan. Just amazing rush of an attack there. I wonder if Cairo went into the same builder trap mindset that I did this game.

Anyway, my galleys didn't load up since there wasn't any point. I will load them next turn and then I probably just stash them somewhere out of sight until it's time to hit that island furs city.

Turn 124 in Baggins? We Hates It

I don't know what naufrager's economic situation is, but I think he's making another mistake by pillaging my cottages

If the whole point is to conquer my stuff then the cottages are part of the infrastructure.

In any case, I decided that what he was bringing up was too much to defend against and emptied Baggins. I left behind a token 2 axes, 2 spears and dry-whipped the walls at that city.

Instead I killed the northern stack.

Naufrager had brought a sword, catapult, axe, pair of spears and pair of chariots south in a second prong. Now that they were nearing the main stack I didn't want to let them converge. In addition, this was a great opportunity to get some extra experience and promotions on my 3xp units.

The first catapult vs catapult battle I won flawlessly at 63% odds. And so I sent another catapult in, and it won flawlessly as well. (Where was this RNG luck at the very beginning where it would have mattered more?) But by then I decided to just send all the catapults in. Every single one of them won and then I cleaned up with my nearby units.

Here's how we ended. If naufrager didnt' have a constant stream of units coming up I might have delusions of thinking I could hold just past the capital. But he has a lot of units now and while I'm willing to make naufrager work for it, I still have my secondary plan in mind.

As a final note, it seems naufrager didn't end turn before I played, and I was so tired and the day so late when I went to play I saw he had moved everythign in my territory I just assumed he had played and went through my turn. I'm glad to hear he had only forgotten to end turn and there weren't any unmoved units.

Also, I will face-palm if Naufrager burns Baggins. It's got an Academy! You keep stuff like that!

Turn 129 in Hurry the F Up, Naufrager

Hiding my 4-move galleys from Amicalola

I thought that 4 units behind walls in the capital would put naufrager in a tricky spot where he couldn't use catapults effectively and he couldn't take good odds on regular units. It kind of worked that way, but he sent in catapults anyway. I killed 2 and then he mopped up the rest. Considering his catapults are the big threat I guess that's a win?

Really though he's just playing this so timidly that he's giving me time to actually whip up defenses. He still has too many units for my scant stack of 7 catapults, but I keep adding catapults every turn. I'm going to start thinking I can hit his stack soon if he doesn't hurry up. And really, I would have to hit naufrager with a resounding defeat for it to really be in my interest. If we just grind each other down to 2 heavily wounded stacks then that lets him wear me down by attrition. (I'm going to be worn down by attrition anyway, but still.)

Also, Amicalola is bringing real units to our border. I'm going to run into more resistance the longer this drags on. I might just pack up and go. But I'm hoping that Naufrager will move up next turn and then I'll use that as my excuse to send everything west.

Turn 130 in the Last Days of the Shire

Good split by naufrager this turn

The horse archer stack will mop up my southern cities easily and when he saw my catapults at Brandybuck that was the right call. My only quibble is he should have done it last turn. (Also, get a sentry chariot!)

Decided I really can't wait any more if I'm going to attack Amicalola. He is showing a pair of catapults now and if I try to milk out as many turns as possible from Naufrager then I'll be going up against a whole lot of catapults. So we moved out of Brandybuck. Next turn we move into Underhill. On 127 we invade.

Amicalola has a sentry chariot inside Underhill, so there's no hiding where I'm moving. I can only hope he is only thinking "there's no way pindicator will attack me here if he's smart!"

You know, the way I thought there was no way he'd attack me earlier.

Turn 126 in the Holding of Sharkey's Hand

duh

Nauf burned Took!  I have no units down there and he burned the city and retreated out of fear.  Man, this is why you needed that sentry chariot!  In fact, even without a sentry chariot you should have easilyi seen that I had nothing down there to retake the city with.

And then he offered peace.

Dude is totally blowing this.  He should be pushing, pushing, pushing.  Again, he's allowed me SO MUCH TIME to whip out defenders.  He's no longer double my power, but it's now more like 67% more power than me.  Still a ridiculous margin.  He should want me to use my catapults and instead he's hiding from them.  Why does he think I've been retreating?  Because I haven't been able to use my catapults effectively (i.e. haven't had enough!)

Starting to think he doesnt' deserve the gift he's being gifted, but whatever.  Everything went into Underhill.  You can see how Amicalola is building up in the border city.  It might be too late already.  We'll cast our dice next turn and see what turns up.  Probably a dud.

Dammit, naufrager.  You had the advantage and you're letting it get away!

EDIT: To be clear, no peace. I'm not going to let him screw up a conquest he should have rightfully made had he actually, you know, tried to conquer things. Also, without my capital and with how much whip anger I have throughout my cities it's pure delusion to think I can carry on.
