Actually, he ignored the ceasefire offer, so we're still in the war I started.

In that case you should both be observing the turn-split established on the turn of declaration, and neither party should double move at all.

He moved a chariot next to the copper, so I attacked with the spearman.
After taking this screenshot, I remembered to hurry a Spearman in Assabiyah. Roads half built in both tiles with workers - one is underneath the spearman.
Also, to be on the safe side, I just switched cap to making an axeman.

I went and looked in PBSPY and you have both double-moved each other multiple times over the 7 turns this war has lasted.

Only during the parts where neither of us had any vision on the other, as it happens. In fact, I didn't assume anything from his refusal of the ceasefire; thought he might just be using the refusal to make me spend more on military while he developed his eco at home.

oh.... oops. Well, I moved 2nd on the turn when I killed the warrior, and when his chariots appeared, and also this turn when I killed a chariot.

That's inconsequential. You can only know that you can't see his units; he might have vision you're unaware of. When you declared you took the first half of the timer, but for the last few action-filled turns you've been in the last half. That's not really fair to get the best of both worlds.

Actually, I went second when I declared, if I recall correctly - that was on turn 39, and I wrote it up as part of the "TURN 40" post (which mentions I killed the warrior the turn before) because the turn rolled while I was typing.
I need to check the etiquette thread and look at the rules again. I saw they were fairly long, and figured I could read the fine print later on, when it would make more intuitive sense.
For someone who's not played Pitboss before, all the fine details of move orders can be a bit hard to visualise, so I got lazy. Sorry! Not a great way to start off at the forum...
What I should have paid more attention to, to begin with:
- The person declaring war can choose which half of the turn timer they get, so long as they didn't move after the victim on the previous turn.
I moved after Rekenner on turn 38, so does this mean he gets to choose now? I did have it in mind ahead of time that I might be able to kill his warrior, so it was "malice aforethought". I thought that this early it couldn't develop into an actual war (clearly I was wrong) so didn't bother checking the war rules.

You need to take the second part of the turn if you played after the defender on the turn before the attack to make sure there is no double move. So your initial war declaration was fine.
The point of these rules is to enforce a proper order of unit movements during war time so noone can move twice in a row and thus do things that would not be possible in a sequential game. Like raze a city from 4 tiles away with a chariot, for example. That there are no units visible doesn't change anything. For one thing, not seeing any units doesn't necessarily mean there aren't any. Moerover, a double move gains you a half-move advantage that can be relevant down the line (for example when moving defending units into a city).
Since you and rekenner have been OK with the move sequence up to now it's not that big a deal. One major reason for these movement rules is to avoid acrymony between players. But please establish a turn order and hold to it from now on.

I only went back to T40, as I was under the impression the war started there. If you went second when it started, then there shouldn't be a problem with establishing that now.
