An interesting read. I do think I would still be in the game if I had forward settled Gem City instead of back settling. I felt like I had to take my chance to declare war or else Rome would just get too far ahead and attack me eventually.

Aggressive settling with PRO archers is not a bad idea. But your main problem was the slow expansion speed. Your new cities were still undeveloped (both in infrastructure and worker labor) when you needed them.

The problem is that this war was at the worst timing when Rome was more or less sure to have praetorians. Should have declared sooner or later (crossbows).

You were loosing on quite some extra gold from PRO for example. You also should start using the whip outside of war.

It was very interesting to see how your large capital fared; it did better than I would have thought. Vanrober in particular should have tried to settle more of "your" land though.
How soon to build the first settler is an interesting question, especially with these lush capitals. It should be possible to have the first settler out around 25, but with the amount of resources to improve you might be better off building a second worker, delaying the second but hurrying the third and later. Another thing I'd like to point out, shock would have been a better first promotion for your archers than Drill2.
Based on the power graphs, I’m not sure if vanrober’s plan to attack the top power Rome is brilliant or misguided.
I think after this game vanrober is ready for a full diplo game, where people actually understand his warnings.
