May I suggest another game feature option? Is it possible to make ai honor wizard pact with condition the same as player (ai avoid area 2/3 tiles away from your settlement, but not include node) as start game option?

I think that the old manual with notes for CoM for DOS explains why this isn't an option. The pathfinding cannot avoid your cities.
You can see that with your own units who will not automatically avoid it unless you micromanage their paths.

Is there a changelog for 1.04.01?

GoG shows this version, but notes in this post list the version as 1.4.0.

Also, the Steam discussion section for this game has a post by "Alberto" (Slitherine, I assume) which has patch notes for (only) version 1.3 back in March 29th. Shouldn't Steam be caught up to the newest version by now?

1.4.1 was a hotfix for a few crash bugs in 1.4.0, otherwise there were no changes.

Aha. No problem! In spells.ini [12] Construct Catapult change the line: SummonedUnit=37 to SummonedUnit=38, delete spells.dat and already you can try out your brand new summoned tower defence. Just add some fancy graphics!  popcorn
