The difference between the Dems being in charge and this Republican Party should be pretty obvious by now, I would think. Pelosi had the same majority McCarthy has, and the House passed a ton of legislation - some of it made it through the Senate, some didn't, but this was a very active Congress.

McCarthy won't send half the stuff to die in the Seante that Pelosi did, and that's assuming he gets to keep the Speaker job for any length of time because he basically handed the Freedom Caucus a loaded gun to take him out whenever they want.

Question about the effect of people voting present: how many rebels had to vote present for Jeffries to win?

11. The GOP has 222 members, the Dems 212 (there's a vacancy that the Dems will win in a special/by-election).

And this isn't over yet - once they agree on a Speaker, the GOP then has to vote on the rules, and the "moderates" in the GOP, such as they are, may be less than amused with how much McCarthy gave up to get the Speaker's chair.

That's how the GOP wins. They know that what they stand for isn't popular, so they try to stop people from voting in whatever way they can.

What do you like about republicans?

The working to overturning democracy? The voter suppression? The hate, fearmongering, and oppression of multiple groups of people? The denial of science? The denial of history? Wanting to limit / roll back social programs (medicare and social security being big two)? Tax cuts and lack of accountability for the rich and powerful? Chaotic and stupid foreign policy? Pushing their agenda through court appointments? I used to think they actual cared about the budget and then that lie was revealed with the Trump presidency.

As a reminder, just that first point about overturning Democracy should have EVERY American voting against them. I can understand the frustration with the Democrats, they have a lot of problems, but there isn't a viable second party. My true hope, is that enough people vote that the current Republican party shatters and reforms into something MUCH better than its current form. Democracies NEED at least two parties that aren't trying to facilitate the downfall of said democracy. I hope for more from a reformed Republican party, but that is the absolute minimum.

I am also curious for you to articulate what you like about the Republicans, SD.

Well the only thing ill say here is gun rights. As i dont want to alienate some of my few (internet) friends.

Mjmd, both parties deny science/history. Hate is on the democrat side as well, id say wanting to limit social programs has some potential. The amount of abusers of the welfare system is... absurd to be honest. NOW, with that said, i also want it to be strengthened. Neither side is going to want to tax the wealthy, because frankly... they ARE the wealthy. Whether i agree or not, each side pushes their agenda through court appointments.

The overturning of democracy is a dangerous subject as has been debated exhaustively. Im on neither side for that.

And there in lies a problem. That one is VERY clear.

You are also committing some logical fallacies. Sure you can probably find some Democrats that engage in science / history denial / hate, but it is FAR worse on the Republican side. So the normal two logical fallacies.

Gun rights. Listen nothing is happening there while Supreme Court is conservative. I maintain if we want to be a gun nation, then we should follow Switzerland / Finnish examples. Pretending A LOT of the deaths aren't preventable is just absurd.

oh im pro- more background checks/ect, but i dont for a second believe that we shouldnt have them.

Never said it WASNT far worse on the republican side twirl Just that i cannot support one over the other as both parties to me, suck.
