we can enable the option to pick CIVs after seeing the lay of the land, it will just require some discipline to wait for the decided upon pick order
If we just meet for the 1st turn network game, we can start the game as simultaneous game so 4th player can pick while the others wait and then so on. We can then change the game to cloud base and should be fine. If everybody is on Steam I can check if I can borrow the game from my wife's library so we are all on the same platform.
Yeah picking civs after seeing land is standard for mp from what I hear. My question though is if we should give civs their starting techs bc that often skews a lot of balance considerations
Starting leaders should probably be random, probably mirrored, definitely not civ-assigned
I suggested to play the first game without characters ("no characters" option) to reduce complexity. This simplifies the available options (as you do not have to care about your families and characters, general, governors and court positions) and keeps a more linear science progression as well (cities, population and improvements are science sources). It also takes most of the events out of the game, so there will be less randomness in that regard and the decisions revolve more around strategical and infrastructure. If we decide for this option, then starting leaders would not be applicable.
In that case CIVs differentiate by CIV bonus, UUs and starting techs only, but if you guys prefer we can play without techs as well. I assume we are also playing without goody huts, right?
Frankly removing the characters or event sites takes a lot of the joy out of the game imo. Having two civs per team also evens out the variance from unfortunate character development
I personally prefer playing with characters as well, it was just a suggestion to lower the entry barrier to the game. We can still decide to play with characters if you guys prefer, it probably is a good idea to make one coherent post with the settings and then have a final discussion on it anyways.
So let me summarize: Players: CMF Bruindane Ginger Kaiser Interested: Banzailizard (last post in November, are you still interested in playing? Krill/Sulla/Speaker/Yuris to fill up to 6 in case Banzai is still in? Current proposal is a Team game: - 2 vs 2 with 4 players - 2 vs 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3 with 6 players
Here is a spreadsheet for the settings
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...sp=sharing It would be great if you can add your opinion in the blue lines and you are invited to challenge any of the other lines as well. Especially the no characters options and the no starting techs option were brought up by Ginger. Should we target a start date, I will be in vacation from 27th January to 4th February but can play early turns, so I would suggest 01.02.23 as the deadline for signups and rough starting point for the game (January 16th, 2023, 07:55)Kaiser Wrote: I personally prefer playing with characters as well, it was just a suggestion to lower the entry barrier to the game. Hey thanks for asking. Considering there are still two easy teams of two I will probably just dedlurk a team this time, maybe play if it looks like there will be more games after that.
we still need to finalize the settings in any case, so maybe there is a 6th player so we can explore the bigger teams or the 3 2-player team option.
CMF still needs to state his availabilty as well so we can define turn order. The game auto suggested to seperate the teams 1 - 2 - 1 - 2, so we might just go ahead and pick the teams along that line.
Tried Old World without characters (& families, advisors, opinions, events, etc) and it does strip away a deep layer of complexity and its associated learning curve. I don't know if it makes for a better multiplayer game, but it certainly removes a source of randomness between players.
A friend of mine told me he preferred games with elements of chance, because when he won it is due to his skill in estimating odds but losing is just bad luck. I prefer characters on, and ok with keeping starting techs as part of why you choose a starting nation. I suppose if the starts are mirrored, having unique nations and starting techs doesn't work as well. For cloud games, do we use https://www.playyourdamnturn.com/? I noticed there is a plugin for it. |
