Sadly, none of the youtube links that were posted still work. But for sure the militant races can work on Small maps, however once you go above Small they get a lot more challenging. I also don't like Huge maps. I prefer Medium the most for sure. I would say Medium, then Small, then Large, and I'll never play Huge.
For Small, Bears can be fun, but they rely on very specific tactics and if you can't pull it off then it goes down hill fast. If you can scout a home world or any planet really very early with them, that's very helpful. If you aren't able to launch some planetary invasions early with them though then it become pretty tough.
Alkari for sure can work with some early aggression and I think they are way better than Mrrshan. I'd love to have seen some of the Mrrshan games that were posted, btu oh well.
I just played a few games and I'd say for sure my ranking for Medium maps is still Klackons > Darloks > Sakkra > Psilon > Meklar > Human > Silicoid > everything else.
I still really like Sakkra. They seem the most balanced of them all, although their starting relations aren't the best, but its not too bad. They have a little mix of early economic boost, but not quite as a strong as the Klackons, Planetology is a very good thing to be excellent in, they are poor in nothing. On a good map with lots of planets to spread to they can get a good jump an be very effective. On maps with few early planets in range they fall behind and have a hard time trying to keep up at that point.
Darloks are the masters of coming from behind of course, but you can still fall too far behind with them. And sometimes the early relations are just too bad and it goes bad fast, but its so fun when it works.
Psilons can certainly be made to work on Medium maps. A little runway is good, with a map that gives you some early isolation. What I tend to do with them that works ok, is if I fall behind then I go real heavy on Computers and just try to spy my way like, kind of like Darloks. Their good relations is very helpful. But from Psilons to Maklars is a big drop. Klackons outclass everyone. Darloks are just special and very different from everyone else. Sakkra a weaker than Klackons for sure, but still decent. Psilons are a little weaker still, and then its gets quite difficult after that. I guess Humans are actually okay, I just don't like their play style.
Meklars can be beasts, but so often it fails to work in my experience. So many things have to go right and they rarely do. If you don't get decent pollution reduction early then almost all of their advantage is gone. Their advantage takes too long to come on line so you can miss getting planets. planetology is a bad thing to be bad at.
