Civilization IV need technical advice on how to run the game

So I bought myself a new laptop and I cannot run civ iv. Can anyone help?
I have a nocd version of civilization which I just copied from a cd something like 15 years ago and since then moved manually to each new computer I had. This time, however, the game refused to run.
I have Windows 11 on my new computer. I did the following:
1) Installed DirectX 9c and enabled direct play in legacy components in windows features
2) Enabled in the properties of the exe file running in compatibility mode (tried win7 and all winXP options), enabled running as admin, disabled full-screen optimization.
The game loads up to "init engine" phase and then crushes.
Any advice?

To be clear, the game is not in program files, it is in a random c:/games directory

I ended up buying a steam version of the game which works fine. Still, would appreciate a solution. IIRC I can ask steam for a refund until I played for two hours.

BTW, if you use Ramk's exe to load the game, steam doesn't count you as playing.

Don't have any suggestions to try to get it working, but will see if I can think of anything.

Yeah no idea unfortunately, I no longer had the old installer and had to rebuy the game when I got a new Win11 PC last year, but GOG version has been working without issues

I also resorted to the GoG version and haven't had any issues.

Oh that's very good to know!

Sadly, that was not the end of my story.
Steam version worked for a couple of days. Then suddenly it stopped working without any apparent reason, the game crushes after "init engine" stage. I restarted the computer and it initially fixed things but then the game stopped running again and this time a restart did not help. Reinstalling the game did not help.
Any tips? It goes without saying that I have it installed outside the program files, in fact, I have a separate logical disc where I store my games. Does it make sense to try buying GOG version instead of a steam version? I can do that but I would feel stupid if the issue persists.
UPDATE: https://support.gog.com/hc/en-us/article...roduct=gog - this appears to work, for now, at least. I will leave it here in case anyone else runs into a similar problem. (It did not fix my nocd version but did fix my steam version)
Really hope there will be no further updates to this thread...

I had a similar problem about six months ago when trying to run the game from a USB on my mother's Windows 10 machine. I had to download a dll file package from 2010, sorry can't remember which one (IIRC I googled the error code and it told me I was missing some older dll files), and it worked.

Interesting. I ran into a similar-sounding problem with my Windows 11 laptop (which I only use to play Civ when I am on holiday, so it doesn't see much use) last week. For me, it only happened once and a reboot fixed it (GoG version, but no Galaxy), but if it happens again - thanks for the thread!
