[PB79] Just one more Game

Hey, sorry about vanishing without a trace. Not very active on the forum these days and I completely forgot I promised to dedlurk in this game. I am still unspoiled though so I can help out going forward.

With that in mind - I wonder if working the forested plains hill, to get the WB out faster, might be better. It'd put you a little behind on food compared to working the sugars, but you'd come out ahead on hammers and you'd gain the commerce from the improved Fish earlier too. I don't think it's a huge difference compared to working the Sugars though.

I like the civ/leader pick fwiw, Carthage is one of my favourite civs with how different their UB/UU are compared to the norm. Not so familiar with CtH PRO but the internal trade routes bonus sounds reasonably strong, and there's something to be said for being prickly.

It's okay, I didn't realised I had an update here too.

Welcome back.

I value the early size 2 much more than the bit commerce of the fish. I think i come ahead on the prod ? I lose only 1 turn on the worker, but I win in the worst case scenario 4 turns of forest hill after I finished the worker.
And a foodtile could better then.

Time to update here too.

Not much explored, I had an early barb fight and lost a few turns to heal - and to move back.

I found 2 copper resources in the north.
Both not really in good places, because I have no coastal city with copper AND a food resource in the first ring.

I still plan to build the Great Lighthouse as first wonder.
I'm thinking if I have time to research Wheel->Pottery before I research sailing->Masonry.

Generally a lush map. I should be able to settle in short distance and have at least 1 food source per city.
And I have found 7 happiness resources already.

The capital has grown to size 4 this turn and I will finish my first settler faster than the 9 turns.
I will chop one forest and can whip the settler POP2 for 4 more turns.

Very lush map indeed. I think it would be possible to delay Mysticism for a while, after Sailing/Masonry, with all the good tiles. Early AH definitely seems unavoidable.

For the Copper - you could settle on the tile marked '110', sharing the Cows and anticipating the plains Sheep going into Karthago's third ring. This spot doesn't push your borders much however, and the Corn/Deer/Incense city also might want that Cow.

Were you thinking of building GLH at the capital or one of the future cities?
Reply

I plan not much - only that I want to build the GLH, but capital is the best city at the moment.
4-6 forest at better than most other cities ?

I favor for the copper city the spot between corn, sheep and copper.
But l 10 is a good spot too - I forgot tile sharing with the capital.

okay, Rick as first neighbour is not ideal.
Praetorians are still a good UU. I'm not sure about the offensive potential. Praets alone
I don't really fear them - especially with numidians.
Otherwise Rick is in my opinion the weakest player here.

And you can see the first city planning in the south.

Rick has the same points and a size 4 capital too.
So he learned and researched bronze working relative quickly.
This is good for him, but not good for me.

I'm 1 prod short of whipping the settler this turn.
So I chopped the forest and I will built the settler normal.

The norther city planning.

AGG Praets are pretty dangerous even with Numids, they get odds with equivalent promos and are a little cheaper too. Maybe not game-ending but I wouldn't want to fight against them. I suppose that more makes them a defensive tool than an offensive one. Without seeing anyone else's borders it's hard to judge distances, but I wonder if that Crab/Wines city site in the southeast is in any danger of getting sniped. It looks like a great place to put a border city if you can get it.

City locations in general look solid to my (not very expert) eye. Where's the first Settler headed?

MM...
Praetorians alone are (on paper) not that good. Yes, AGG changes this not by a small value, but Numids should swing this back to me.

Praets/Catas could be a problem, but then again, I can flank the catas.

Settler to the north to the copper/sheep/corn site.
I found horses - good position.
The horses fence in a lion on the plains hill. I good a fogbuster there.

I will whip a worker next turn and then grow again with warriors.

I'm starting to improve the second city.
Surprisingly, I have a trade connection to the capital.

The scout finds a surprising foodless group of hills in the east.

I'm the only one who whipped already, so I'm a bit behind in the moment.
When I get my improvements a bit faster, this should change.

Certainly a stark contrast to how resource-dense the capital area is. Triple Lighthouse-lake spot is something, especially with FIN, but hopefully there is seafood in the fog. Whipping 4-2 makes perfect sense with two 5f tiles.

Since it's almost certain they're separate bodies of water, how soon were you thinking of planting a city with access to the northern ocean? I imagine the islands we can see now are firmly meant for your civ, but I wonder if there aren't other landmasses that will be more contestable.
