[PB78] Underdogs and undercats: The Mrrshan warlords visit the world of Civ IV

A standoff hurts Gav a lot too. By building units he isn't capitalising on EXP or the two wonders he built and is throwing away his chances whereas I don't think ours are lower as a result of the conflict. If I hadn't razed the city he would have got 8 chops and a silver to help his GNP, and would have still built units and attacked us a little later but from a lot better position. We also woundn't have been able to settle Reticuli which is incredibly powerful and when it comes online in a few turns we should be able to match his troop production if not exceed it.

Archery for us is a key tech because it's not only archers and horchers but as Native America also our monument is there. By being CHA we get the monuments half priced at 15h and they give us an extra happy and an easy way to pop borders, and by being Native America they also give archers and melee units extra xp. A key reason for our pick was that we can get 3-promo melee out of the gate without civics or GGs, just 40h for half priced monument and barracks.

One thing I'm wondering about is what direction to take with research. We need to expand our foodhammer base and already have a good GNP so currency isn't nearly as high priority as usual. Also it would be great if we can neutralise the Gav threat but I'm.not sure what the best way is. Feudalism and defend with 3-promo vassalage longbows? Attach with swords and/or horchers and/or cats? Literature and build the heroic epic also to pop Reticuli's third ring quickly? Currently I'm going for writing->mathematics for better chops and because it opens up good follow up possibilities.

While I'm hopeful that Magic won't join the cold war I do think that SD will benefit a lot from the Great wall and that together we'd be able to 2vs1 Gav very effectively. Even if SD gets all Gav's cities it would still be great for us to no longer have a blood enemy and a strong SD will counterweight Dreylin and Magic better, improving our chances to catch up. But I just can't communicate to him that a lot of Gav's troops are tied down and that he'd have easy gains if he joins, nor can I entice him in some other way.

This table shows my point. Instead of keeping up with the others he has the same number of cities as us and we both have significantly more troops than anybody else. I didn't make any aggressive moves after the raze and even didn't put EP in him to allow him to get graphs faster showing that I'd leave it there, so he could have just continued to settle in the other direction making use of his wonders and EXP trait. It's not like "make sure Thrawn doesn't win" is a worthwhile thing to play for.

SD just lost 10k power without being at war and we also lost trade connection so it looks like he has barb problems. Hopefully this gets him thinking about the Great wall and I'll send him another request to join the war.

Problem is that the RB meta may be "attack me early and I will drag us both down", so as to build reputation for future games, particularly for a regular like Gavagai. I just don't think you had much choice here ...

This.
PB players hold grudges.

Players are different, but for most of them it's actually true that when they no longer see any chance of winning, they want to prevent the person who ruined their chance of winning from winning.

And as shallow_thought has written, there is also a certain preventive component involved.

Generally, you should avoid smalls injuries.
And I think, a lost city this early ? This is more a middle injury.

It was definitely not a small injury. And I've been talking deescalation but Gav actually just asked me for peace for a second time and I rejected offering a cease fire instead. The reality is that I have been squeezing him and preventing him from settling the space east from me and currently the north as well. However, I do believe that this has been the best course of action even with the growth cost it has been imposing because he will fight me as soon he is in a good position to and this has been the case from the moment I lost the capital and got relocated close to him.

A mechanics questions. If you look at the following cross between land and sea -

When testing in world builder a galley cannot cross from one sea tile to the other, however a naval trade connection does happen between the two. Can someone confirm that this is how it works?

PS. And another unrelated question - when I recapture Fierias, will it have kept it's culture and the second ring will be available, or will it start from 0 and need to pop borders again?

Wait what, there is a naval connection ?
Okay, this is unexpected.

After Fieras is out of the resistance, it will receive the old culture again.
And I think you have enough culture on the cityplot to get the recapture bonus of no resistance.

Turn 77

Not much to report over the last 10 turns. Reticuli is now online with 10 food surplus and 8hpt, and Mentar got a lighthouse and reached 9 food surplus with 4hpt. Willow is still stagnant at 9hpt.

SD got the Oracle and seems to have chosen Feudalism. Also, I belatedly realised that he also flipped a barb city on T55. The Gav situation is a little more relaxed though still dangerous and he has the advantage of being able to strike from the fog. However there seems to be tension between him and Magic which is promising.

Overall I'm happy with how the game has been developing except for open borders between SD and Magic. SD seems to be focused exclusively on Dreylin but Magic has been pulling ahead.

Still some time until we can settle new cities and recapture Fierias but it's coming.

40 turns after losing our capital, we are (momentarily) not last in food:

A shame that you can't use the soldier count to liberate the cap, or ?
