I wondered if there was a reason for the difference in Barbarian aggression. But I also wonder if the extra room long-term will be worth this suffering now, in consideration of the special rules. Every city must be defensible. You must not stretch yourself thin. So maybe other limiting components will stop them from settling more cities before they run out of land. And is the extra land any good anyway? It's Antarctica.
Participated in: Pitboss 40 (lurked by Mr. Cairo), Pitboss 45 (lurked by Charriu and chumchu), Pitboss 63 (replaced Mr. Cairo), Pitboss 66, Pitboss 69, Pitboss 74
Participating in: Pitboss 78 (lurked by GT), Pitboss 79 (lurking giraflorens), Pitboss 81 (lurking giraflorens) Criticism welcome!
I mean a lot of it isn't. The ice portions are worthless. Some of that tundra isn't. I'm assuming there is more seafood west that got cut of in regional screenshots though. But there is a deer in the tundra on a river. And a long river through the tundra. Depending on how late the game goes could matter. If there is more seafood west for Commodore extra ports seem super important if also vulnerable.
Man a forward plant from Scooter here is super risky with 3 city elim. It also makes a Yuris plant a little risky. They both are kind of screwed if a chariot or two show up and they don't have a spear. I wouldn't want to play this format, but it does make for great lurking. Everything is a bit tenser!
I guess they are aiming for an Eastern Port and that's the only spot I see with a Hill for defense, so my bet is that they plant that spot.
I was hoping they would post a screenshot of the area.
This was a stupid settle spot. Its the "this looks super good" spot. Its also super far forward and not very defensible. Like they can hold it against 1 axe sure, but in the short and medium term its precarious. Especially with super delayed copper. I mean if Yuris just decides to whip a couple axes followed by a couple chariots that is dead. The correct spot if you wanted to be bold would be the grassland hill NW of the desert (south of worker). You chose creative, make use of it! Yes it doesn't get corn with THAT city and its weaker, but the culture will basically isolate everything north anyways, so you can pick up later. That spot is two tiles closer to you and two tiles farther from Yuris; also gets settled 1 turn sooner. And mind you even with that spot I would want copper hooked and a spear on the way. He is short on land so I understand the urge to grab, but this seems almost suicidal.
And they figured it out and are reinforcing with chariots.
That barb warrior beating a Commodore axe. Wow.
Not detailed in the reporting, but I’m pretty sure it was an Axe that had attacked out to clear an Archer off the pillaged Cows. So it’s hard to tell how much of an upset without knowing how healthy the Axe was.
I think if I was in scooter’s position I’d have put the Archer in the desert and both Chariots on the Pigs; but I also hadn’t thought / factored the possibility of a Spear upgrade.

You can argue about tactics (his trailing chariot seems out of position to me regardless of his plan; should be on the forest with his worker 1SE of its actual position if he's committing it to this fight) but I'm actually more curious about the strategy. I actually suspect scooter is mostly playing impulsively here, and not thinking about the bigger picture. Just looking further back in the thread for something that I loved at the time for the (intentional) humor and the way scooter put it... ...which is now maybe unintentionally becoming even funnier? Of course, Commodore's slow start with a capital move for a weaker snowball followed by barb rushes might mean there's still enough time on that side, but if I'm in scooter's place, I think I'd rather see yuris aimed at containing Cornflakes rather than skirmishing with me. (By this point, that ship may have sailed though.) |
