Workers and City specialisation

First post here. Hopefully not the last. Hoping to do an adventure 4 report.

Anyway I read about city specialisation in lots of posts here and think it might be a good thing to try as I have massive economy problems in every game I play.

However something occured to me. Say I go for a commerce city how do I get my workers to build the right land improvements? Is the only way micromanagement (hope not as one of the things that attracted me to civ4 is the worker automation seems soooo much better than previous attempts), or if I set the city manager to commerce (the coin) will the workers play ball and build the best commerce improvement on the tiles available?

I will get this economy thing licked one day.

I must say as an ex "expand like crazy to win" TM civ2/3 player this is a bit of a culture shock eek

Sorry to disappoint, but manual control of your workers is the only way to customize the land around a particular city.

There are only three leans anyway, though: max food (for specialists), max production, or max commerce. You can combine two, or even shoot for "some of everything".

If you want to leave the workers automated, you'll have to operate within the boundaries they set for you!

Thanks for answering Sirian. I thought that might be the case frown

Ah well stick to micro management I guess. would be nice if they did respect what you wanted to do with the city resouce manager though.

Anyway off to see if I can finish my report for Adv4. I think I made too many notes and will be writing for days. Good job you extended the deadline smile

If you really prefer automated workers, you can use the "workers don't remove improvements" and "workers don't remove forests" checkboxes and automate some workers after manually building all the improvements you really need. This can let you focus on other things while your workers build lumbermills/mines/farms/railroads everywhere.
