Does anyone have an original version of MoM?

In the very early versions, the spell system was entirely different. You started out with no spells, but picking extra books let you pre-select a number of spells that'd be available to research down the road. I'd love to bring this feature back, and am wondering if anyone has an early version of MoM to dissect.

I was never aware this was taken out, from what I remember, when you stacked up a full set of books, it let you pre-select a few spells, wasn't aware that was removed in later versions and I'm pretty sure I always play 1.31

I used to have the original set, but I'm afraid I got rid of all my 5.25" and 3.5" floppies some time ago. I do have a number of them backed up on CD, but unfortunately MoM didn't make it. (MoM's been with me as 1.3.1+ on all my computers since.)

Try this guy:

You can also get it for $90(!) new (or $11 used) here:
http://www.amazon.com/Master-Magic-pc/dp...945&sr=8-1

Or for $6 here (redirected from abandonia.com):

That is, assuming these are the 1.0 versions.
Were there ever any box versions that were not 1.0?
I only remember that whenever you bought a computer game, the first thing you had to do, is to download and install the patches.

I have the original v1.0 floppy disk set that I've made images of. I'm not sure if floppies came in other versions but I know we have a box set for the v1.2 CD.

Welcome Ickus, hope you'll introduce yourself in the introduction thread smile

I'd be most grateful for a copy of those floppies. I had one myself but it was lost years ago.

Why would you love to bring this feature back ? Don't you think there could be a good reason why it was removed ? For example, because it hurt replayability ? Imagine you can not only guarrantee Paladins in each game, but you can also guarrantee Lionheart, High Prayer, or Flamestrike. There's still a way to guarrantee this: take lots of books. I don't know how exactly the old system worked, but I imagine it allowed to use very specific combos with low cost (choosing only few books to assure killer spells). In the current system, each game is different.

A Python enthusiast in me says: don't try to get all features, try to get the right features :-).

Why would you assume I haven't thought this through already? :P
Not all changes are a change for the better, and I consider this one a change for the worse. And you're wrong in your assumptions of how the system worked.

If someone has a v1.00 of MoM, I'd appreciate a copy of the original HELP.LBX file. There's something in the header which I would like to analyze, it would help ensuring the file's integrity in case we expand it with more records. I do have the original discs, but they are 500km away from me right now and I have no idea whether they are still intact ...

Regarding the "guaranteed spells" feature: Catwalk, are you sure that that the original way of selecting spells was ever in the released product? My impression was that the spell selection system was changed after the printing of the manual, but before the release of the first version of MoM. I'm not 100% sure though.

b0rsuk: I think you misunderstood the way the originally intended spell system worked; check the manual, it's described there. smile
