Thanks smile The changes so far aren't set in stone, some of them I do care about but most were just done on a whim. I suggest making a small update post whenever you change something in the original post.

We have a slight problem with the suggested changes.

The game only supports fighter, bow, mage, and warrior-mage hero-types, yielding respectively W-A-R, B-A-R, S-R-R, and W/B-A-R slots.
This hero-type is part of the unit-type definition in Wizards.exe.

I think we need a code-change or a tweak-after-the-fact to support more combinations.

A code change is possible. We will need to get some more space from routines around.

How many variants does current Catnip version have?

Crap, I thought they were done on an individual basis. I swear I've seen some save game editors that did this. Would it be possible to alter heroes in this manner after hiring them?

Yes, once a hero is hired, it can be changed arbitrarily, but only after he's hired.

Could we then have the shell change slots dynamically during the game?

Of course, but I'm currently trying to change the code to allow for any slot-combination.
That seems niftier and more flexible to me. I'll get back to you on that.
EDIT: It will be my first code change!

Awesome, hope it works out.

I've just uploaded my results with which you can give heroes any types of slots.

It's integrated in the just uploaded new Tweaker. See the CHANGES for details.

I've also uploaded a first CHANGESET.
It contains the changes for the hero-slots relative to Insecticide-1.40i, which is included in the changeset.
