Looks like a bug

This is a picture from a recent single player game.

As you can see my city is not in range of the circled tile - yet this tile is being worked. It is within my own cultural boarders, and I have no other cities near it. I checked on the city screen, and as I expected it was outside the working squares for my city, and not being worked by me.

Obviously Toggy shouldn't have been able to work this tile as its not in his boarders, but it looks like he IS working it. Also notice the water tile above it - this should also not be worked but is. I forgot to ring this tile in red, but its easy enough to see.

Just thought I'd post this here - has anybody else encountered it at all?

Couple clarification questions (just trying to clarify what's going on):

*Did the borders of your city just expand this turn?
*It doesn't look like Nara, or that other Japanese city on the coast on the left is in range of either the land or water tile. Is there ANY city I'm not seeing on the screenshot that would be in range of those tiles?
*What version of CIV are you playing?
*What are the specs for this map? type, size, settings, etc

Looks like it might be a graphical bug; the working graphics being pushed to the wrong tile for some reason. I mean, the AI can be dumb, but working an unimproved desert tile, not on a river?? wink

I have no idea about the land tile. It is a desert tile, right? So what could it be generating, even if there was a city nearby? As far as I remember desert tiles are not worked (exception: flood plains, resources).

However, the boat on the seafood could indicate that a working boat is installed there. This can be easily checked by moving the pointer over the tile and check whether there are fishing boats or not. You can also check your resources screen to see whether you get that seafodd resource or not, since it is apparently in your cultural borders.

So, how was that for a top secret tip? :hat:

The water plot is a netted Clam.

The other is probably a "bleed over" from the tile south of it. I noticed in Adventure Four that sometimes the graphic for a plot being worked got put in an adjacent plot. It's a bug, but too minor to bother with at this point in time. Maybe down the road.

In my single player games to date, watermills appear in the wrong tile more often than not -- quite often on the other side of the river.

So now your for unrefined releases and patches in the future to fix an unfinished product?

I believe I shall attempt to save Sirian from the necessity of responding to somebody taking his words that far out of context.

If by that you mean what he actually said, which was (emphasis mine)

then... hang on, what am I saying? You clearly don't mean that. So why are you saying that your representation is the same as his? What you said and what he said are completely different!

This bug is nothing! Do you ever, really, see it affecting anyone's game materially and detrimentally to a relevant extent? I certainly don't! Therefore, it should not be a high priority. If patches got delayed and delayed and delayed while more things like this were fixed, if everything that anyone ever pointed out were fixed before the patch were released... The patch would never be released! Do you want that, instead of a 'partial' patch and further improvements later, then? I certainly don't, and I'm pretty sure Sirian doesn't either.

This game cannot be finished in one patch. Of course it can't! It's far, far too big for that. Everything has to be checked, every even slightly significant change has to be checked against everything *else*, and balance changes? They're the worst of all by far! You may yearn for the days when games were released as they were, with no patching process in sight. But none of those games were a tenth the size of Civ4, and far the majority of them had bugs, which weren't fixed. Would you rather a game is released, so you can have the joy of playing it as well as the developers, and then have them fix all the problems you find, over the amount of time necessary to do that, or would you rather stick to your ideals of 20 years ago?

The other point that needs addressing is that you say to Sirian "So now you're for...". Given that the answer is clearly no already, it also needs to be said that the sentiment Sirian *actually* expressed is entirely consistent with the rest of what he's been saying for months. You have no call to go suggesting that he's suddenly changed his tune.

In short, you won't find much support here if you don't think this game should have a good, ongoing patching process. You'll find even less if you attack Sirian, especially with no good reason.

I think I've said more than I should. I'll shut up now.

Every good artist knows that no work is ever going to be perfect. At some point you've got to stop messing with it and send it out the door, or it will never go out the door. Where to draw that line is a matter of opinion, but it is also the artist's prerogative. If a minor flaw irritates you, you are free to choose not to buy that artist's work.

Sometimes after a book has gone to print, a typo is noticed on a single word. Should that typo be corrected? Yes. If it were noticed in time to correct it, would it be corrected? Yes. If the printing presses are running, do you stop them, throw away the money spent so far, and start over? Over one typo? No. You mark it down as something to clean up for the next printing run and go on with your business.

You won't endear yourself to an author for calling his book "unrefined" and "unfinished" because there's a typo on page 163. *shrug*

Thanks for clearing it up - Its cool that you can see which water tiles that aren't in range but are still providing resources are hooked up. As for the other tile - I was just wondering about it, and as Garath said - it did not have any effect on the gameplay or my enjoyment at all, just thought I'd ask about it.

Thanks to all for your help.
