Where does "Pink Dot" come from?

I've seen "Pink Dot" used so frequently for such a long time, such as this Cuban Isolationists thread from 2005. Is this the original? Or does the term go back even before Civ4's release?

Sorry if this is common knowledge, but I didn't find anything conclusive while searching.

That thread is IMO the "pink dot" original. But im sure it came a bit earlier....
"Superdeath seems to have acquired a rep for aggression somehow. Specifically THIS page http://www.sullla.com/Civ4/ADG2.html About half way down. Sullla notes " Yes, using a Sirian-esque Pink Dot for good luck. " So its been around... awhile.

It definitely is from the Civ3 era of RB, though I'd say the Cuban Isolationist's Civ4 game from 2005 definitely popularized it. That game had an unreal number of eyeballs on it because it was right as Civ4 was launching, so it definitely made the term far more widespread.

Dotmapping as a concept dated from Civ 3, but the concept of Pink as being an aggressively forward settlement came from Cuban Iceolationists.

Civ 3 wouldn't have had the idea of Pink because that game's terrain was much more homogeneous in terms of yield; there wouldn't be a game-defining outlyingly good city site as in Civ 4.

I believe this was the original Pink Dot screenshot, still there on Civfanatics' upload server after 15 years.

It's not even particularly aggressive by modern standards, it's kind of off to the side, not directly at a rival.

Do not take any gameplay advice from anything that Sirian and I did in the Cuban Isolationists game. We accidentally misdirected a large part of the community for years with our decisions in that game. lol
