I mean, killing him was a team effort that game, but neither dtay nor Rusten have signed up.

Your first Civ choice: Chinese
Your first leader choices: Napoleon, Alexander
Starting screenshots will be posted in a couple days. You may wait to finalize a choice until then. You may reject or accept any of these choices. You will have a max of 2 more choices of civ and a max of 4 more leaders.

A good excuse to rank everything again:
Starting techs (ranked in a vacuum, order changes when we see our starting food)
Wheel - 60b
Fishing, Mining - 50b
Hunting 40b (starts with free scout MP, so > agri)
Agri - 40b
Myst - 60b (religion is risky in big game, better 40b I need than 60 I don't)
Traits: (starting land is a bit below average size, lots of players competing for 1st-to boni)
Phi (Don't want to play again though)
Exp
Spi (Serfdom moved to Monarchy, that tech becomes a big power spike for Spi)
Cre (big game, harder to get religion/henge, other good border pops)
Imp
Org
Fin
Cha (wouldn't mind picking this, despite low power level, due to new effect and usefulness of border pops)
Ind (hard to win many wonders in big game)
Pro(big, multiple continent game, lots of foreign trade)
Agg
So Alex(Phi/Agg) is a nope, I don't want to play either of those traits.
I could live with playing Napoleon(Cha/Org), could probably roll into something better though.
China is definitely pickable too. Any civ that is obviously better will be picked on this roll if the option is available, so we're less likely to roll an improvement.
I'm more confident in hitting something with the leader roll, because there are more total leaders, we see more options, and I don't think everyone has the same trait valuations I do. We'll wait for the starting screenshot anyway.

Here is the starting screenshot. Let me know when you've decided whether to lock in either the civ or leader or what you'd like to reroll. Confirm in the next two days please. I will be rerolling for everyone that rejects either civ or leader or both once I have all confirmations for this round of selections.

I'm super afraid of getting a Mysticism civ with the tech costs. India or Inca are probably worth the handicap, but there's 8 other Mysticism civs in the pool. When we're picking 25 civs from 36 that's too risky for me.
Re-rolling leaders because they're both still pretty uninspiring.
I agree with people in the tech thread that worry about late game tech going too fast btw. I just think this is mostly a late game issue and not as important as the early game issue of massive tech costs. Unfortunately it is not possible to fix both without rescaling the tech costs like RtR does.

You may choose to accept or reject again. After this you will have one more round if you reject. For civilizations. in the third round any civ twice rejected will be removed from the pool.
Second round choices:
Catherine, Saladin

Catherine is very good, I'll take her.
The high tech costs hurt IMP a bit because you need to get to BW before the first settler, whereas slow building is an option with other traits. Still, China's selling point in the old days was her perfect techs for this kind of thing. Agri for 2 food sources and then Mining to go straight to BW, I imagine we can make something work.
With a massive map, maintenance will be really low and the land looks really lush, so we'll want to expand like crazy and 2 early traits are good for that. The low maintenance should be a small buff to Cre's libraries as well, allowing us to run a higher slider.
Regarding Saladin, I'd be very interested in taking Spiritual, but I'm skeptical that Pro is a good enough trait at the best of times. It's possible that Lewwyn isolates all our continents until post-Astro, but I'm not willing to bet a trait on it.
As an aside, I think EXP is the trait that took the biggest hit from the high tech costs. It really starts to come into it's power when you get Pottery and BW and that time should be heavily delayed in this game.

I forgot to mention when I got the starting screenshot, Fin also got a massive bump from all these rivers. I think anybody that comes out of this process with two out of Fin/Phi/Exp/Spi/Cre/Imp can be pretty happy with themselves. Org/Cha/Ind are tier two material while Agg/Pro are still the dregs.
