Immolation feels very weak.

Perhaps not completely useless, but underwhelming as far as uncommon spells go. I tried rushing chaos channel on apprentices to immolate gargoyles and it is barely enough to fight cockatrices in node. For such a massive investment 10 damage without bonus to hit barely scratches the enemy. I feel you need at least 12 to make it noticeable by the time you get it.

No way that immolation would works against cockatrices, damage from immolation is low to kill cockatrice before engage in melee. It has enough hit point to tanking up against immolation.

It's more effective against many, low hp figures like a halberdier. Cockatrices have only 4 figures but 8 hp each.

Does Immolation apply to ranged attacks? Would an archer unit enchanted by it do figure aoe damage at range?

In CoM immolation is melee only. And even if it worked it wouldn't be as good as simple cheap flame blade in most cases.

By the time you get gargoyles with immolation effectiveness against halberdier is of low importance.

Immolation seems fine to me. It's cheap and you can toss it on various high-value units. Even units with only 3-4 figures still take damage from it and that in turn protects your own units more. Halberdiers are seen through the mid and into late game and something like nomad pikemen can slice up even your hero or great drake; immolation helps stop that from happening.

Also, I'll point out that there are endgame units like the hydra that will also still take a ton of damage from immolation.
