I also didnt play the first one, but played a BUNCH of 2.
Side note.. WarGroove is basically the spiritual successor to the series. Would either of you be down to play it?

Going to be a very interesting leader/civ/start phase.
Leader, the traits I like the most are Agg/Chm/Cre, but Phi, Imp, and Pro are worth something and Financial shouldn't be put out entirely; a shocking number of the tiles-to-work here are coasts and lakes and commerce is low. Boudicca is my default leader pick but San Martin and Kublai Khan are also very very good.
Civilizations, this is going to be a game won or lost by galleys and/or horse archers. So civs are either those that boost (or supplement) the kill units like Mongolia or Egypt, or civs that hard counter, so Native America or Greeks.
Position I just want to avoid being next to Thoth/Krill.

Hey Commodore, why do you say that the deciding mil factor will be mobility/forking from naval or horse threats?
I would assume that Catapults are the most asymmetrical advantage possible, does that not hold up in your experience?

It's more a declaration of intent. When catapults come online, it becomes a sheer nightmarish numbers game, and a huge one at that. I'm much happier if we can make decisive moves before Construction is long-held...maneuver warfare is profit, slugging matches are zero-sum (or negative sum).
I'm going to angle for Native Americans if at all possible, which makes me think my next pick is actually going to be North East, unless NA get picked. Sadly, I don't think I'll be able to have another game with 216+ turns without ever researching Agriculture.

I picked the start because I think grabbing the hunting start more or less guarantees me Native Americans. We are going to try again to not research agriculture for at least the first hundred turns or so.
