Nodes with many behemoths.

Nodes with many behemoths are coveted for their treasure often containing green spell books and retorts. The guards are formidable opponents though. What is your approach to such lairs?

Behemoths aren't that tough, with enough buffs even 9 halberdiers can decimate them. The ideal way to whittle them down is Invisibility + Mind Storm + Banish, though.

The problem with Behemoth is that they:
1. have nature 40 SP spells
2. very high armor (17 in a nature node + elemental armor will give them 29 armor vs ranged magic and damage spells + iron skin will give 34 defense)
3. high regeneration - 3

so to kill behemoth you need either of:
1. a killer hero with some kind of protection from crack's call which can be either of:
a. Invisibility (when no colossus is around)
b. wraith form (immunity to web and freezing effect of ice bolt)
c. merging
which can withstand an ice bolt
cold immunity for protection from ice bolt will also help (immolation?)

what is a killer hero?
any of the archery heroes with buffs from levels/spells/artifacts (because the elemental armor don't protect from arrows)
especially the Huntress, at level 5 with a good bow/holy weapon you have 27 attack with ~85% to hit
can kill a behemoth in 3-4 shots . with more level up and buff can kill a behemoth in 2 turns.

2. good /buffed archers, for example if you can get longbowmen, with holy weapon and cast the prayer spell
and get their attack to 8, 70% to hit (by hero with guiding beacon, holy bonus, flame blade, etc...)
8 such longbowmen will kill a single behemoth (with 22 defense - Iron skin) in 2-3 turns.
if you can get more buffs, you can kill the behemoth in 1-2 turns.
you can slow down the behemoth with web and earth to mud. my suggestion is to take a single nature book in every game to get these spells.

3. resistance based:
if you can black prayer (-2), mind-storm (-5), hero to save artifacts (can be between -1 and -10) maybe in combination of the warp creature spell. you can lower the behemoth resistance so that resistance based spells can eliminate it,
spells like: confusion (-2) banish (-4) exorcise (-1) or resistance elimination ranged weapons like death/exorcist (-3) you can kill the behemoth like that..
for example:
1. cast black prayer (-2)
2. cast 'warp creature' a few times with a hero with a staff with -3 to resist
-> after a few attempts the behemoth resistance will go down to 0. and any resistance based elimination spell or range attack will kill it.

if you have illusion spells like mind-storm or phantasmal bow, of course it can help.

remember that if you leave the battle before winning the behemoth will return to life because they have regeneration.

I personably find the colossus more threatening than behemoth because of their supernatural strong ranged attack and illusion immunity.
but a combination of both in a node is something I keep for late game when I have the raise dead spell etc...

For a blue book mage, if the behemoth has a lot of casting skill left after the initial combat round, Aether Sparks can half that. Also, phantom warriors/phantom beasts ignore the behemoth's rather high armor.

You still need to kill them in one go because of the regeneration so you want to make sure nothing important dies in the first round.

Another way to deal with Behemoths is Crack's call, with a 25% chance of burying it with each casting. As a Behemoth has 42 hp, a single successful crack's call won't kill it, just bury it, so you still need to finish it off. If you bury it and then kill it, it is permanently gone, even if you lose the battle. There used to be a bug that if was buried and killed, it regenerated anyway after the battle, but that bug was fixed in the latest version.
