Worldstone Reef Wrote:Not far from the mouth of the bay, the sea waves break across a stony coral reef so ancient that it features in many creation myths:  Some say that the marble deposits shaped by Kilmorph near the shore were made in imitation of it or even out of parts of the reef itself in the long-forgotten past - while others claim the world itself, land and sea floor alike, are just overlays of rock and dust and soil on a framework of primordial coral.  Ocean life abounds across the coral reef, and the upper and outer reaches of the stony coral can be harvested as building materials, but the foundations of the reef are impervious to even the most powerful sorceries and enchanted tools.  It was known to the ancients that any ship that tried to navigate the breakers across the jagged shallows created by the reef must do so with extreme caution, taking it slow, for even the strongest hull can be torn apart when striking the barely-submerged coral - and consequently, any ship that successfully navigates the reef and establishes itself there with the coral to cut off enemy lines of attack would be extremely difficult to dislodge by other ships at sea.

Your start:

(Worldstone Reef is a Marble resource on a coast tile with an Ancient Forest.  The marble can't be connected, but the tile yield with Fishing is 2/2/2 before city improvements.  Units on the tile - friend or foe - also get a +50% defensive bonus instead of the usual +10% for coast.)

And your first set of options:

Shekinah (Creative/Arcane) of the Sidar, with Mysticism

OR

Volanna (Aggressive/Creative) of the Svartalfar, with Animal Husbandry OR Calendar

OR

Jonas Endain (Spiritual/Expansive) of the Clan of Embers, with no additional tech

(Or you can throw all three back for a different set of three.)

Thanks, Ref!

Initial thoughts:

- Sidar no thanks, even though with more space and more barbs it could be shade farming easily. But CRE/ARC is a bit meh...
- Clan could be interesting but so slow and no additional tech... no thanks.
- Svarts is a bit boring as I played them couple games earlier (well, I won too). I had Faeryl (ARC/RAI) there though. But Volanna is a very strong leader so it's tempting not to throw these 3 back. Their WS is very poor but can be used with some tricks. Their Hero is very good with an amazing equipment: Black Mirror! Bigger map suggests that FoL with maturing cottages could be very good too.

So not locking in yet but Volanna seems the way to go. Need to think about the tech too, both seem good choices. If I saw Calendar resources it would be easier to pick that.

Alright, lock in Volanna with Animal Husbandry.

To start off things it's sad something like this has to be addressed. In a game with all (assumed) adults and things like this is against the whole point of playing:

"... to seek challenge and fun, not simply 'high score' or 'the most elite stuff!'"
"...to look to become friends with those you play with"
"... to treat others with respect, whether you agree with them or not"

but also...
"... to steadfastly avoid cheating "

For lurkers (and after game for others): I've come to conclusion that I can no longer continue playing this game. I don't trust mack to play fair in combat (or in any other ways either). He has done suspicious things before in earlier games (farming animals/barbs with low odd battles to get shades early or winning multiple lucky odd combat in a row against me (or Dave in his last game, he reported that quite nicely), a lot more examples). After discussing the issue with him on Discord I found he holds grudges over a game that was over 5 years ago (I was Sidar, he was Elohim). He calls me winning many low odd battles there unfairly (he won that game too) and I can't find any details from his old thread what are the combats he is referring to. Anyway, that's the background (and the reason I should have never started this game with him but oh well).

But why this game makes me suspicious?

Well, here we go:

Here he killed my Illuson copy of my hero (Alazkan the Assassin). You can see the Camel Archer that won the fight and from which direction it came from. Attacked over river against an unit that disappears + IF you lose it heals +100%. The odds were 71.5%. Asking about this afterwards why he risked here the answer was: "I needed xp for something I wanted to use the unit and more to show you go in other direction and let me alone." I mean, he was the one who first was aggressive here (killed my exploring Hunter) so. But hey, what a reason to risk 71.5% combat: I needed xp for something! But what if you lose your 80 hammer unit for not even hurting the enemy illusion....

Okay, that's not too bad, could happen I guess. Even if it's weird.

Later I brought my stack next to his city, on AF hill. Here is my best unit, Aeron's Chosen Assassin and it has Black Mirror so I made a copy of myself. Notice the promotions and remember Illusion defends first before real unit.

The Assassin (and the Illlusion copy as well) has a strength of 17.7 if he attack over river and 15.3 if not (or has Amphi promotion).

So next turn I see that the Assassin is dead, at least he lost something, right?

Yeah... A warrior. So first he attacked with warrior against my Illusion presumably at 0.1% odds for whatever reason? And lost so it healed up (if it even got hurt). Then he attacked with his Camel to get a withdrawn with my Illusion (no idea of the odds but likely about 2% with 35% retreat. Hurt the Illusion at least a bit that the real unit became top defender and beats the real Assassin at 26% odds (he told me the odds afterwards). I tested and the only way to get 26% odds is if he attached his Great Commander to a Camel and it was a C4 unit and didn't attack over river. Worth a shot? Also I see no unit that is this highly promoted afterwards. Or the one that withdrawn from combat. But I see a Galley and his Amphibious Camel is gone, maybe he put the Camel(s) there for some reason? Attacking my units on AF hill also costs 3 movement so the Camels must've had at least mobility 1 also.

Of course I can't prove anything of cheating but to me this is enough, I can't trust mack to play fair so there's no point in continuing. I've already told the other players this on Discord. So yeah, I'm done with this crap.

alright

That really sucks Auro, I'm sorry.

I have to say, I've never followed the details closely enough to feel sure, but after some other accusations of that nature previous I'd be wary of signing up with mack (if I was ever inclined to play again, that is).

Well, it certainly is the kind of extreme outcome I'd get while save abusing VS the AI....
on the other hand, the withdraw chance could make these actions on his part reasonable.
What about the general strategy? If your illusion only gets 1 free kill per turn, then his strategy doesn't make sense to me.

Uhh Bing, should you be here?

The illusion can't kill, to be clear.

No, but my curiosity got the better of me, esp. since the game seems like it's just committed seppuku anyway.
I'm just wondering what the reward is for mackoti to try the gambit as he describes it.

Illusion can kill, only on defense though.
