What have I done to deserve such a fate? My past few pitboss performances have not been great...

Here's my tear list of players signed up for the game (minor pb75, pb79 spoilers for players involved in those games):

1. TBS. TBS always wins, and the few times he didn't win are because he lost to mackoti. What else is there to say?

2. Mmjd. Mmjd has a keen eye for detailed micro plans and economy building. Usually that puts him in a competitive position. He's not always the best at timing aggressive pushes, but other then that usually puts a good game in even if he is not #1.

3. Naufrager. Naufrager generally is decent all around at Civ 4. Sometimes he struggles a bit with diplomacy, but otherwise puts in solid if not game winning performances.

4. Dreylin. Dreylin has had a bunch of good performances in the past. The past few pitbosses he has played recently have seen him suffer some bad luck (PB74), but PB75 also made him seem not quite on the level of advanced players like Mmjd, Civac, etc. But he can still put together a good economy and war fighting when need be.

5. Superdeath. Superdeath is infamous for committing brazenly to early rushes that ruin his game, but he has shown that given decent land he can make alright use of it. The main thing holding him back is an eagerness to go on tilt when his land is only moderately bad compared to his opponents.

6. Xist10. Xist10 struggled a fair amount in his first few PBs here. His recent performance in PB79 shows a marked improvement, with him doing much better in expansion and wonder building compared to past endeavors. Since he has already shown himself to handle the military side of the game pretty well, I thought he should be higher in the rankings.

7. Greenline. I think my civ 4 skills are not that great. I do not have patience for detailed micro or simming besides the first 30 turns. I've never done a good job chopping out wonders. I'm still struggling with not crashing the economy when expanding. I am really, really bad at Civ 4 warfare; one of the small reliefs of playing Civ 6 games is not having the threat of being boned by intricacies in stack combat. I also do not think I have the required emotional state for being a great pitboss player - I find it very easy to get discouraged and give up putting 100% effort into things, especially without a dedlurker.

8. Giraflorens. Giraflorens from what I can tell from PB79 has fine instincts. Their game just seems to be played somewhat slowly compared to the competition. Slower cities, slower teching than one would expect. They might use the experience from that game to improve and be better than me.

As you can see, objectively I belong on the noob island.

noob island:

Greenline: Wang Kong (PRO/FIN) of Persia

I was interested in playing Wang Kong after I saw Xist using it in PB79. Seems that you can expand pretty well if you whip a food heavy capital a lot even with no IMP. PRO I liked a lot in PB72, and doubling down on economy traits seems like a good way to get a decent GNP without having to rely on landing a wonder like mids. Persia has bazaars to pair with PRO, since I do not know if there will be enough coast / islands to justify a Carthage pick. AGRI / HUNT / FISH are good techs for the start too. Immortals seem like they will make settling for strategics more flexible with their defensive bonuses.

Superdeath: Catherine (IMP/CRE) of Byzantium

I don't think this will work. My experience with Cathy in PB75 was that even with Sumerian zigs, the economy was bad. If the land is fertile enough that each new city has two food resources and 5 riverside grass cottages you can scrape by. But otherwise, you will never make it to those shiny Cataphracts before the other civs make it to rifles.

SD being SD he might just axe rush one of us anyway.

Xist: Tokugawa (AGG/PRO) of Sumer (Vulture/Ziggurat)

I've underestimated Toku before to my detriment. PRO is a good econ trait and on cramped maps AGG vultures are no joke. Although I feel a little better having a chariot UU on hand. Zigs are good for the economy, although probably less good on a map where you will only be presumably expanding in two directions instead of four.

Xist improved a lot from his previous games here in PB79. I expect him to be the main competition on noob island, given SD's civ / leader pick.

Giraflorens: Qin Shi Huang (PRO/IND) of India (Fast Worker/Mausoleum)

The pick is solid. India gives you super workers to chop wonders, QIN wants you to build GLH and maybe oracle + col.

Gira's play has not impressed me that much in PB79 and I predict they will not make the most use out of this pick though. Probably will grab one wonder and stagnate.

vet island:

Mjmd: Julius Caesar (ORG/IMP) of Zulu (Impi/Ikhanda)

Non agg Zulu with ORG, that's a combo. Mmjd is a good player but I don't know if early aggression plays to his strengths. Full cost ikhandas won't be the most fun thing to spam, but I guess combined with cheap courthouses that will be good cost savings eventually. I still think the old staple of Genghis of Zulu might have been better here.

Mmjd, good player, won PB75. But he will be packed with TBS and two other vets. I'm guessing he wants to hem TBS in early with impis.

Naufragar: Boudica (AGG/CHA) of Portugal (Carrack/Feitoria)

Feels like a random pick. No boosts to early expansion, naval civ, but with aggressive for land battles? ORG / CHA would be better for going all in on naval supremacy. Or Mongolia + CHA for maximum land attacks.

Naufragar can run a good civ show economy and war wise. But I don't trust him to have any good gamesense for picking his targets on vet island and for diplomacy to blow up in his face.

TBS: Pericles(CRE/PHI) of America (Navy SEAL/Carnegie Public Libary)

Pericles of America demands utter focus. You will have access to all the great people you want at fast speeds, but you better know what you're going to use them for. You can lollygag by building MoM and spamming golden ages but there's no guarantees of being first to calendar with those traits.

TBS of course is a god tier player and clearly has some gameplan involved for the great people spam. I look forward to reading what that plan is 9 months from now...

Dreylin: Willem (CRE/FIN) of Rome (Praetorian/Forum)

The most "don't rush me" combo of them all. Praets are fucking annoying as shit to invade unless you have protective chucklenauts, and CRE gives a lot of room to defend on borders. FIN for some boost to teching.

I think Dreylin picked this because he was annoyed at being eliminated early on several games in a row and wants to be able to survive to the end for once. TBS/Mmjd will probably see this coming and expertly rush him before he even gets iron working.  alright

Always fun to read opponent overviews. Fun fact: I've played against Willem of Rome before.

The good news: the tundra visible in the starting screenshot is gone. The bad news: barbs are on. I am sure I will have a fun experience losing 90% victories early in the game.

I did some lazy simming. WB first gets to BW faster and the worker does not waste turns. But Worker first has a settler done faster and gets the ivory improved. The settler being out fast seemed much better when I saw those GEMS right nearby.

Naming scheme is Seinfeld.
