Only Connect style Word Wall

It has been a long time since I've been on these forums but I thought this sort of puzzle might appeal to the people here and I'm truly stuck. This is a puzzle from my local Parish magazine (small village near Bristol) that has stumped me. It's based off the word wall from the Only Connect Tv series.

The words are:

Jack
Chris
Crow
Steam
Martell
Sledge
St George
St Mary
Admiral
Cross
Wine
Sluice
Water
Damien
Nail
Flood
Dan
Commander
Commodore
War
Claw
High
Captain
Lieutenant
The rules are as follows: "All you have to do is arrange the 24 items on our wall into six sets of four. You'll also need to provide an exact description of what connects the items in each of your sets. Your description must be sufficiently precise hat the description of each set could only apply to the four items in the set. Descriptions such as 'male first names' won't do"

I have ideas for threes sets of four but they might be a stretch. Any help would be appreciated!

Hmm, I think this was constructed with some UK-based interpretations. The first thing that stood out to me is the five naval officer ranks, one of which does not belong. In the US, I'd say Commodore, but it looks like the UK navy still has that as a standard rank, so it might be one of the others.

Other thoughts:
- St George and St Mary seem way too obvious to put in a set together, but I don't know anything about either of them to draw any distinctions.
- there are three alcoholic beverages in Jack (Daniels whiskey), Martell (cognac), and Wine, but I don't see a fourth.
- there are three compound _hammer words in Jack, Sledge, War, and three other non-compound phrases "_ hammer" in Steam, Nail, and Claw.
- Of all the words, I have the least idea of where to start with Damien

Thank you for your thoughts. This is from a small village between Bristol and Bath in the Uk, so very Uk interpretations required!

St George and St Mary are very specific I agree. There are two neighbourhoods in Bristol that are sometimes referred to as this but I couldn't find another two to go with them. Martell

The 'Hammer' connection is the one that jumped out to us initially as well. You can do similar things with 'gate' and 'bar' as well.

In terms of drinks you could conceivably add 'captain' as in Captain Morgan Rum but it feels like a stretch.

Agreed on Damien, it feels veery specific whereas ones like Chris feel very generic.

Oh and someone pointed out to me 'Martell' could be a games of thrones reference but I don't know enough about it to know if there any others.
