Adventure 10 - Gusto Report - Sant'Impero Romano

Hi. Name is Gusto. I've been lurking on RBCiv for a few months reading the Civ4 game reports and playing private games on Warlord and Noble difficulty. Adventure 10 is my first RBCiv game. I felt ready to play. Click on the link to read my report.

I found the English dubbing to be a bit distracting - I don't think you have to go out of your way to explain crociata on page one when you are going to demonstrate it on page two.

Monarchy looks like an odd choice from the Oracle - had you planned what tech you wanted when you started building it? The picture I would normally recommend capturing here is the "Oracle gives you a free technology" screen, so that people can see what your choices were.

Salamanca is an odd city to have kept while fighting la Reina.

I see it differently. I thought the language fusion worked well, and it's always best to define new or unknown terms on first use. That whole "deduce the meaning from the context of the sentence" thing is bad advice anyway, even if they are overly fond of teaching it to lazy students in public schools. Heh.

Anyway, style points from me on your report. Thanks for posting! smile

I concur. Wonderfully atmospheric report, with the Italian sprinkled throughout and frequent use of signs for labeling geographic regions. This was one of the more entertaining reports I've read in a while. thumbsup (And as far as that last statistics shot goes - wow, someone likes their suicide cats! 77 lost, yikes! eek )

Just don't expect to see me running "auto-Emperor" anytime soon! lol

I appreciate your honest feedback and expected some readers to be distracted with the way I wrote my report. Anyway I wanted my first report to be stylish and entertaining so readers understand what to expect from my reports. nod I wanted to translate all the Italian phrases on first usage. I wasn’t expecting people to know, deduce, or research what the phrases meant. Plain Italian phrase would have degraded the report. I wouldn’t have added them if I didn’t translate them. Now you’ll all set for my next JC report … thumbsup

Yes. Rome was a hybrid city in the early game, later it became strictly a military production city. The below screenshot illustrates my early tile configuration for Rome. It was the best balance of both production and commerce; and keeps the city steadily growing for whipping. Size 6 was the minimal size for Rome after I achieved this tile configuration and please ignore the gems – it popped much later in the game. Hereditary Rules provided an instant +2 happiness in all my cities because I had two archers garrisoned in each. The +2 happiness kept the cities growing and provided cushion for war weariness. From game start, I wanted to be proactive in combating it so I could warmonger longer. Thanks for the Oracle screenshot recommendation.

Salamanca is a pathetic location for a city and I was very close to destroying it. I captured it strictly for the two happiness resources; and later whipping missionaries to spread my religions.

lol It was getting tedious mm'ing cities, improving tiles, and fighting every turn at this point in the game. Each turn was so time-consuming. When I finished all my stacks for the last war, I wanted nothing to do with running my empire any more and only concentrate on fighting the war. I've researched, improved, and built everything I needed to complete the game. I thought of “auto-emperor”. I now realized a stronger move would have been to set all cities to wealth, and not research. Gold was more important than research at this time to upgrade older troops. Oh well. Live and learn.
