Civ on the DS and consoles - Spring '08

This seemed inevitable. I'm curious how stripped down the game will be. Probably too much to capture my heart, but perhaps retaining enough to make it worth playing! Just to get some too early worthless speculation in.

Maybe that's what Sirian's working on. huh He's been really quiet even on the BTS front.

There was a Civilization for the SNES, though I think it was just a fairly direct port of Civ 1 for DOS.

Hey, I'd love a game with Civ 4 quality and AI, but stripped back down to the elegant basics of gameplay...

There was also a version of Civilization 2 for the original Playstation. I don't believe either it or the SNES version sold particularly well.

It wasn't clear from that press release whether this is going to be a port of Civ4, or an entirely new version of Civilization. The platforms on which this Civ game will appear were also not specified. I think that a Wii version might have promise, using the pointer to carry out mouse functions; less certain about other consoles.

Should be interesting to see what Firaxis comes up with.

Wow, I really hope this isn't just a simple port of an old game, but possibly either a completely new version, or a Civ4 port that is somewhat stripped down like T-Hawk said. If it came out for the DS, I'd probably pre-order it...

It's a new game:

Quote:Legendary designer Sid Meier builds the Civilization® experience from the ground up for consoles

Quote:Sid Meier ... "create a great and unique strategy game for newcomers to the series"

That said, it would only make sense to leverage parts of Civ 4 that make sense. The AI in particular, and also perhaps some art assets and models if they're appropriate.

Quote:Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution is a watershed game, offering players a chance to experience the epic empire-building world of Civilization in an all new accessible, visually immersive, and action-packed world specifically designed for the console and handheld gamer.

That doesn't sound like traditional God-view turn-based Civ at all, though. That sounds like a first-person shooter or strategy hybrid...

yeah, after reading the article it sounds like a bit of a departure of sorts, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this game.

oh. well, this answers the question i had from the press release earlier this year, where they said "2K will have new content based on its Civilization franchise". i'd been curious/suspicious/not-sure-what since they didn't specifiy an expansion or new game or what content was. i don't even know what DS is. i tried lego star wars on hubby's xbox or whichever type that one is once. he forgot to warn me that the controller shakes in your hand! that scared me so bad i haven't played it since *giggle*. so i'm not their target market here lol which is okay.

at least it's not what i most feared ... Civilization: The MMORPG

I had the same problem with my girlfriend's weird light-saber thing. Some things you don't expect to shake.

How would a Civ MMORPG work? Everyone plays like one unit? That'd be great!

You would start out running around with a wooden club.. then you would kill a spearman and take his spear and shield.. and then you are equipped well enough to go kill the guy that drives around in the tank lol

That wouldn't make any sense. All the units would be running around randomly. That's what I don't like about most multiplayer games. Everyone just does their own thing. There's no leadership or common direction. Especially in FPS games.
